An article I just read has some history of the draft in it but what caught my attention was the fact that a Senatorial commission is voting to require women to register for the draft. Yay women's lib! Yes, I know women have been in the armed forces for a long time. Nurses were needed and women volunteered for their country. A friend's daughter is an air force mechanic. But forced registration of young girls for the draft makes me nervous at this time in our history.
I don't think it will go anywhere, but I think either women should be required to register, or registration should be eliminated. Even though, as @Al Amoling said, the draft hasn't been used since Vietnam, many young men have been punished through the loss of employment opportunities, Federal student loans, Federal housing assistance, etc. if they didn't register within 30 days? of their 18th birthday. Women suffer no such penalty. Since Obama in his wisdom insisted that women be available for direct combat duties, they should also be penalized in the same way as men if they don't register.
