Begun in 1961, the Berlin Wall was effective for 28 years until the fall of Communism in 1989.

It was only 11 feet high, but succeeded in preventing residents in Berlin's Soviet Eastern Sector from escaping to the Western Allies' Sectors.

I was there in Berlin when it came down...the emotion, was absolutely heartbreaking to witness with families who'd been separated for all those years finally reunited

I toured the museum of the wall back in the 1960's and cried all the way through. What people had to do to leave East Germany just could break your heart.

Going over to East Berlin for the day was heartbreaking, too. Such a sad place and we had an unpleasant experience coming back through Check Point Charlie.

Luckily, the train ride to and from Berlin through East Germany was uneventful, except for the fact that I had to have my 14-year-old sister on my transit visa as my "child" and that was dicey at times (I was only a teenager myself).
