Yep, another thread that I can’t quite justify putting it anywhere else but here in the dunno forum. Games we used to play as kids that we would probably never consider playing as adults but low and behold, yup, adults are playing them and making big bucks doing it. I was perusing YouTube as I often do and bumped into a professional Carom tournament. I thought to myself, “I haven’t even seen a carom board since I was around 5 or 6 years old!” If you’re not familiar with caroms, it’s kinda like pool but played with small poker chip like pieces. I remember playing the game but for whatever reason, I grew out of it and never really thought about it again until a few minutes ago when I saw the video. As I was finishing watching the carom video I saw “Tag” in another window so I played that video. Yup, grown men playing tag.....professionally. They obviously knew a little parkour because there are a lot of obstacles in the way in which each player must navigate around in order to catch the pursued person. I remember playing the game when I was a lad but let’s face it: It’s a KID’S game! I stand corrected.....it is no longer a kid’s game. Then of course, my brain went right to “jacks”. Are there professional Jacks players? Probably but here’s a lady who knows how to play. And Tag?.....yup....but no children playing it! And.....here’s professional Caroms. Now I remember why I quit. Flicking that derned carom piece Hurts!! I wonder what other kid’s games have turned into money makers? Tiddly Winks? Ring around the Rosie? Maybe.
oooh we used to play jacks when we were kids right out on the roadside... with stones. That woman is going to ruin her table if she keep playing jacks on it... Good Lord, grown men playing ''tag''... how are they making money from it?
As I mentioned, it looks like the guys have taken parkour so the audience is probably made up of a lot of students of the art and wherever there is an athletic event, there’s bound to be sponsors and an entrance fee that would be shared with the house.
Jacks is out.....anything played sitting on the floor is out. Tag? What could I possibly want badly enough to chase? Hide-and-seek? Maybe....if I could find something big enough to hide in, like Madison Square Gardens..... Hop-Scotch? Me jump around on one foot? Surely you jest? Red Rover, Red Rover, Send Mary Over? Nowadays, it would be Red Rover, Red Rover, Send Mary Over After Her Nap. Simon Says? Says what? What? Speak up! Jump Rope? Oh, please.....get serious. Blind Man's Buff? Where's my glasses? Button, Button, Who's Got The Button? Velcro, people, Velcro..... Musical Chairs? Been replaced by power-lift chairs. THAT I could play!
Ah yes, but here are some “older folks” in the UK who DO get on the ground! Marbles anyone? Of course, I do understand that many of us have lost a few of our marbles but these guys and gals seem to have kept the majority of theirs.
I can truly admit I have never excelled at any games or sports. However, I CAN take a pencil and draw anything I can see or dream up.
Pick up sticks was one we played as well as tiddly winks. Ring around the Rosie. Giant Steps. Red Light. Mumbley Peg.
