    Hey y'all, I was talking to my mom yesterday, and she mentioned something odd. She said that she didn't get her Social Security check for December, but that she'll probably get two this month, because that's what happened last year...they skipped depositing it December 2015, and deposited two in January 2016. That sounds very odd to me, especially since many people only have that income to live on, and it could place the recipient in dire straits.

    I told her she needs to check into it, because it is possible that someone is holding that money somehow and making interest on it for a month, and if they did that with a lot of checks, they could make a substantial amount of money. I can't think of another reason it would happen, and I don't know anyone else it's happened to. I thought I'd ask here, and see if any of y'all have dealt with this issue.

    By the way, here's a link with the schedule for Social Security deposits in 2017.

    @Diane Lane
    I have never heard of that happening; my own deposits have been right on the money, so to speak, for 12 years now. If indeed an employee is "holding" deposits back, as you mentioned, that person would have to be pretty high up in the "command", I should think, and since the whole works is totally computerized, employed in some Information Services Department.

    IRS has various options allowing complaints to be filed; I should think S/S must also. Personally, I would get in touch with S/S and inquire about this.

    We have never had that happen with our either @Diane Lane And we got our December ones direct deposited right on time. If your mother is still getting her checks in the mail, someone could have stolen it, or it could have gotten lost in the holiday mail, etc. But she needs to let Social Security know she did not receive her December payment.

    I'm sorry I misunderstood. In one sentence was a check and another sentence said deposit. The answer remains the same she definitely needs to let SS know the money didn't get there in December.

    I think @Frank Sanoica is right. You should call the SS office or go see them with your mother. I could see it might have gotten messed up in December of '15, but it can't be a coincidence that the same thing happened again in December of '16. If someone had stolen her check the first time, why wait a whole year to steal another?

    I found that link a little confusing. My birthday falls on the fourth of December. I get my disability check on the second Wednesday, my SS widows pension from my husband comes on the third Wednesday, and my own company pension comes on the 30th of each month.

    Never happened to me, nor do I know of anyone else having a problem with a "skipped" SS check or deposit.

    I believe the money is in the bank it just didn't show up on her bank statement. It happens to me often. One bank statement will show no deposit and the next one will show a deposit at the beginning of the statement period and another toward the end of the period. Call the bank, not social security.

    Direct deposit has been mandatory for SS and all other federal benefits since 2013. Instances where they will issue a paper check are extremely rare.

    Yes, she has direct deposit. I called it a check because that's what it was called in the past, so it's typically how we refer to it. I know she'll most likely need to contact them. I posted it here more to find out if anyone else had experienced the issue, prior to proceeding. Thanks for the responses, everyone. I appreciate it. It's good to know that it's not a widespread issue. I'm going to mention that to her @Sheldon Scott, she'd probably rather start with the bank than SSA, since dealing with SSA will probably take longer. If it's not an issue such as that mentioned by Sheldon, I couldn't understand why it would happen, unless as I mentioned, there's some sort of insider issue going on, or the administration has been hacked, which of course is not unheard of. Hopefully what has happened to Sheldon is also what happened to her.

    Hope she has it sorted out by now! I've never had a problem, my widows benefits get deposited directly into my acct every 4th Wednesday of the month so it's not always the same date. This month I think it will be on the earlier side. :)

    I sure didn't see any cola in our SS deposits this month. Did anyone else see a small raise in theirs?

    I don't think the Medicare Part B will rise for those who already have it....but it might for those getting ready to sign up for Medicare Chrissy. There was a raise in cost for part B two years before we were able to sign up for Medicare so we pay a higher payment than my older sister does since she was 65 before they raised the rate for part B.

    Ok, thanks...I was worried about that but relieved to see it stayed at $125! I had heard as high as $160!

    I just checked on the Medicare website and for those signing up for Medicare part B this year...they will pay $134. So it has gone up again since we signed up.

    I just realized that I haven't gotten my January deposit yet but was going by something I got in the mail. I'll find out for sure on Wednesday if anything has changed.
