I have known that tomatoes will make more roots along the stem, so I always plant them deeper in the dirt and let the stem develop more roots. However, here is an even better version for planting the tomato by letting it lay on its side on the ground for a couple days, and then the top will start to bend upward. You then make a trench and lay the tomato plant in the trench sideways, with the bent part sticking up out of the trench. This allows the whole length of the stem to make good roots and help the plant grow bigger and faster.
This is a method I've tried to explain many times. Generally I got that look that said, "Sure you can." If you allow the plant to get "leggy", then pinch the very top off, and then plant them sideways, it will forces the new shoots to grow even quicker. This works for many vining plants. Although I was an accountant, I did study Horticulture for three and a half years.
LOL...that's an excellent tip @Yvonne Smith ...however I grow my tomatoes in a grow bag in a little poly house
No , it's a tiny little thing... the growbag just sits in the bottom and we take the top shelves out ... we did try and grow tomatoes in it one year without the growbag without success
