Here are some old ads that some of you might remember, or not. Most of them would be considered inappropriate, by today's standards.

@Ken Anderson My Mother remarked now and then when the subject of beer came up that when she was pregnant with me, our old family doctor advised her to drink a bottle of beer daily, preferably Bock beer. 'Course, I never once saw her drink a beer AFTER I was born, so........

Beer was prescribed to pregnant women for years and didn't seem to affect anyone adversely, especially Guinness, as low-alcohol, high nutrition concoction. I think La Leche League still tells women to have a beer while nursing, especially if they are having difficulty producing adequate milk. It relaxes anxious mothers and seems to increase milk production. I don't think doctors every recommend it any more, as too many people think, "If one beer is good, six will be better."

About a month after my son was born, the pediatrician prescribed camforated tincture of opium or commonly known as paragoric for an intestinal problem he had.
When it didn’t seem to be working I consulted with my next door neighbor who was an elderly retired MD. He told me to cut out everything in his diet and give him 7-UP for a couple of days and sure enough, the kid started filling up his diaper with uh....the healthy stuff..........

The Be Independent advertisement reminded me of The Have More Plan that came out in 1947.

It seems like the back to the land idea comes up every other generation or so.

I have that book too. It was the beginning of the "new" back-to-the-land movement after WWII.
