What four past Presidents would you place on a modern-day Mt. Rushmore? I would choose FDR as one, even though I'm now a Republican. Hal
The only one who I think might be worthy of being on there is Reagan. And I'm not totally sure about him. To deserve a monument like that requires greatness, I think. I don't know of anything a recent president has done that can be called great. OK, maybe Truman. He did make the decision to drop the bombs. I doubt if he would want to be there, though. He was the meekest of men.
@Emma Smith And defacement it would certainly be! Viewing today's attitudes regarding political correctness, environmental concerns, great incensement about the defacing left by mining, arguments against "fracking", and on and on, carving up a mountain would now amount to nothing more than providing unending fodder for the lawyers. Frank
@Frank Sanoica Great leaders are often not great men, but even if they are great in some ways, they're just men, with their own flaws and mistakes. Women also. They can put a statue in front a building - at least they can rip it down years later, when public opinion shifts, without workers risking their lives. Fracking is just another disaster with known and probably unknown future consequences.
I DIDN'T MEAN TO DEFACE THE MOUNTAIN, Emma...JUST USE A DIFFERENT MOUNTAIN! And since Gutzom Borglund is dead you'll have to use a different sculptor. Hal
What I meant was....If I were to try to pick 3 others to go with FDR, I'd pick from the 4 on Mt. Rushmore. I guess I missed "modern day" in your original post. I'll think some more and get back to you....
I'm sorry I started this thread...everyone's getting the wrong idea! Didn't I say a MODERN-DAY mountain? Sheesh! H.P.
A "modern day mountain" would have to be from a volcano or the result of an earthquake, wouldn't it? I don't think anyone thought that.
I wouldn't want to waste the money on any "modern day" politician; none of them are worth commemorating IMO.
@Patsy Faye I'm giggling, too. With delight, but for a different reason. Just got back my blood work-up results. CBC with Platelet count: Only one item outside acceptable range, Red Blood Cells, low acceptable number 4.3 m/mm3, actual reading 4.22. Pleasing results! Now back to the important things: Fracking, good and bad? Today, the United States is the TOP oil-producing country on Earth! Finally exceeded Russia, in January, we produced 11 million barrels. This is due in large part to fairly recent advances in the extraction process such as horizontal drilling, and fracking, which is a take-off on the term Hydraulic Fracturing. We now squeeze petroleum out of rock such as shale (oilshale), something not previously viable economically. Fracking is in large part responsible for us now having to import NO MIDDLE-EASTERN OIL! The dependence on Arab Oil which resulted in the panics of the past is over. Good and bad. Frank
