A few months ago, I bought a small flashlight that was, I think, 1,000 lumens. I don't have the paperwork for that one anymore but I think it was supposed to be 1,000 lumens. It's not large, but it illuminates a square of space all the way across the lawn, almost as clear as daylight, and it does it without lighting up the area around that square of space, just space about 2 square-yards.

Last week, I bought a larger flashlight that has a maximum intensity of 5,000 lumens. I'm sure that someone here understands the technology as to just what that means, better than I do, but it lights up my whole backyard, all the way to the railroad tracks from my backdoor. If there was a cat in the yard, in the dead of night, I'd be able to see it.

I've read reviews that say that when it is advertised as 5,000 lumens, it's not really 5,000 lumens, and I don't know about any of that, but it's very bright. I don't think I'd want to be on the receiving end of someone shining it in my eyes.

It's very good for lighting up the yard at night but it's probably too bright to be used for such things as looking for something under a bed.

We have two small, hand size, of these. They really, really can light up an area. Talk about bright!

I have a light that plugs into my lighter in my Tracker that will light up the world. I generally only use that during the two-mile off-road drive to my camp, if driving it at night, so that I can see what critters might be in the field or another of the clearings along the way.

I had one of those back when I was selling insurance and needed to read street signs and house addresses at night. They work really good for that.
I remember when cars actually had a spotlight on the outside, around the area where the side mirrors are. When poaching deer at night became popular, they made them illegal.
My dad worked for the power company, and he also had a huge spotlight mounted on his line truck, so he could shine it all the way up the power pole and check the transformers until he found the one with the fried squirrel on the top.
