Back when my eyes were sharper and my hand steadier, I would make hand drawn greeting cards for kin and friends. They were well received and requests for cards were taking up all my spare time. People would approach me at work and want me to draw up a card, spur of the moment. I explained I can't draw from memory very well. The way I worked was to collect as many cartoon strips and comic books as I could. Then, I would find a cartoon character or other in a pose I needed, re-draw the character to the size I needed, add other details such as scenery etc, and color with felt tip markers. Not all my cards were cartoon characters but they seemed to be the most popular. I was experimenting with 3-D pictures, but quit to pursue other interests.
I have a friend who makes the most exquisite personal cards. She uses very little in the way of materials and yet they are so effective. Below is not her work but an example of her simplistic style.
How I love to receive hand-crafted greeting cards particularly for Christmas. When I was in grade school, our teacher would require us to make our own Christmas card that we would give to our parents. We would be provided with fancy card boards as the platform and do our craft in scratch paper. Upon approval of our teacher, we would then redo the design on the cardboard and make it a final version (because we were given only 1 cardboard for that purpose). In the recent years, what I usually get now are Christmas greetings that are digital. Mostly videos and animation, it has music as well. Come to think of it, time changes and everything changes but our taste sometimes remain stuck up in line with the tradition.
I never really had an artistic talent, but I would always make those greeting cards for my parents and other family members for different occasions like Christmas or Easter, but that was a long time ago. Have you got any pictures of the greeting cards you made in the past? It would be great to see them.
Wow, this personal card looks amazing. If her work is as good as that, then see must have a lot of clients.
