Desert Island Discs is a BBC Radio programme created in 1942. The format is very simple: a guest is invited to choose the eight records they would take with them to a desert island. They are also allowed one book and one luxury item. I will put up a list later, but while I finalise my selection, I invite everyone to provide their own choices.
Hmm, looks like it's down to me, then. Okay, let's try these. Undertones - Teenage Kicks Chosen by the legendary DJ John Peel as his favourite single of all time. I find it hard to disagree. Pogues - Sick Bed of Cuchulainn The Pogues are probably my favourite band, so I'd have to have at least one of their songs. Doctor Feelgood - Back in the Night I remember hearing this song on the radio in 1975, when there was so much utterly dire music around. It genuinely made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Snooks Eaglin - Down by the Riverside I love blues music. Snooks Eaglin was, in my view, one of the greats, though he was overlooked by many. "Ain't gonna study war no more" is a sentiment after my own heart. Wedding Present - Davny Chasy Ukrainian folk music is wonderful. The tune of this was used for the dismal "Those were the Days" but this is infinitely better. Dubliners - Rising of the Moon For reasons too convoluted to relate, this has become almost my theme song. Clash - Career Opportunities I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time when punk rock hit us and there was nobody better than The Clash. Botany Bay - Kate Rusby An appropriate song for one stranded far away and who could resist the beautiful voice of Kate Rusby? Not me. Only one book? That's tough to bear. I wonder if they would allow complete collections, but probably not. I'm tempted by Don Quixote, but I could read - and have read - Ovid's Metamorphoses several times, so I'll go for Ovid. Finally, a luxury item. A pub serving cask-conditioned beer!
I love Desert Island Discs..always have done... My list would be the antithesis of yours Tom....(yours is very similar to the choices my o/h would make) We've played this game so often over the years but trying to narrow it down to just 8 singles and one book is really hard because where the music is concerned I'd change my mind every day and I am an avid reader so one book would have to last me a very long time... I'll have to think about this when I have more time... BTW we used to cheat and name 8 albums..instead of singles..
OK...I've made 8...but these are just favourites which I would like to have with me on a desert Island, they are probably not the definitive 8...in fact tney are definitely not, but if I was in a rush and just managed to grab hold of these 8 to take then I would be quite happy. I've definitely got loads more *eights* I can list... No reasons given for my choices.... Jamie Lawson.... Wasn't expecting that.. Hot Chocolate ... You will always be a friend Mike and the Mechanics .. Living Years Leonard Cohen ... In My Secret Life... Charlie Landsborough ...I will love you all my life.. Willie Nelson * Nora Jones ...Wurlitzer prize.. Faron Young........ Hello Walls Glen Campbell.... Ghost on the Canvas The book is a hard one to choose also.... but I think the choice for today anyway, would be... Something Sensational to read in the Train...Gyles Brandreth My luxury Item?....A solar powered Radio ...just so I could hear voices and not feel so alone..
