Do any of you in America get to see any Brit shows ? I know you have some that are re-done - but any originals ? If so - what are they and do you understand them
I loved "Derek" on Netflix. Shows I don't watch anymore but loved were "Absolutely Fabulous" and "Keeping Up Appearances".
I have a hard time getting into most British movies. Maybe it's the language, since the British don't speak English very well at all. Or maybe because everything always seems so dreary; even the comedies are dreary for some reason. There have certainly been some exceptions. After watching the US version of the series, Being Human, I found the UK version and watched that as well, and preferred the UK version. And, of course, who couldn't like Monty Python? There have been quite a few others as well but, very often, I will try a movie based on the synopsis, which immediately becomes a negative when I find that it's British. There have certainly been other exceptions, none of which I can think of at the moment.
@Ken Anderson - agree ! Only a handful of British movies I like, they do a good job with the war movies and a couple of dramas As for the humour, I prefer the British sit coms to the comedy films, the sit coms finished for me in the 80s though The good writers are no more ............... There are some very good TV dramas, I guess its the same scenario everywhere
Yes, I don't watch them but I know there are some on BBC America. One Brit show that is very popular here is Dr. Who. I don't think I ever saw it though. I loved the Tudors. I think that was made for American audiences though. I think it was originally on a premium cable network. I have heard people talk about British shows they like, but I haven't gone looking for them. As a side note though...some of our American shows here are take offs on British shows. Like the Idol, America's Got Talent series..So You Think You can Dance and All in the Family was a take off on a British show,,Cheers too I think.. Some shows that have gotten very popular over here were originally British shows.
@Ken Anderson - If you like Monty Python (I didn't ) You really should try 'Fawlty Towers' Its about a hotel run by John Cleese, who is so good in this(he wrote the series too)
My son loved Dr Who, I watched it a few times back then and it was okay but didn't care for the newer one or ones at all.
Oh Patsy, Another sitcom that I know for sure was based on a British TV show was The Office. It ran here for years, and had a very popular cast. I didn't really care for the show that much, so I only watched it a few times, but it had a huge following. It solidified the fame of Steve Carrell, one of our bigger actors here in the US, and I am sure you know him too.
I loved "The Office". Never saw the British version. Ricky Gervais is hit or miss with me, sometimes I think he's hilarious and other times he's not.
I have bunches of friends who love Dr. Who and I tried watching it once, but couldn't get into it. I did like The Office, but I lost interest before the series ended, and have never seen the British version.
