I live off grid in the woods of Alaska and think it may do me good to socialize a bit, even if it just online.
Sounds nice. We don’t have the isolation it sounds like you have but I am definitely not a people person. It’s me, the kitties, my wife and that’s it. She has some friends she meets now and then but, honestly, I prefer the quiet at home with the cats. …and welcome.
Awesomeness ! Glad to have you with us, @Eilidh McFarlane , and we have another member ( @Don Alaska ) that lives in the far out wilderness of Alaska, too; so you and he will have a lot to relate to, and we will have two people making us feel better in the wintertime that we are not having 40 below temperatures Down here when we all think we are freezing to death if it is below 40 above zero. I am looking forward to hearing more about your off-grid life and how long you have lived in Alaska. I am a north Idaho transplant, now living in Alabama and not missing all of the cold and snow at all.
Welcome from Virginia, Eilidh. I'm in a rural part of the state on some land, so don't have folks nearby. Most of my human contact is with retail workers...and here. ps: That's an unusual first name. Is it a legacy family name? The web says it's Scottish.
I used to think I would enjoy living in Alaska but at my current age I'm probably better off in the lower 48. It would be great to hear about your life living off grid though. I look forward to it.
Welcome to this happy forum, the social event of the year. If you are very isolated, it well could be.
Welcome @Eilidh McFarlane! I lived off grid for 15 years in the mountains of Eastern Oregon. I spend 3 months in Alaska when I was 10 and that was great but the winter with little daylight and below zero never appealed to me. One of my great great aunts had the name Eilidh and was from Cockburn Scotland.
Welcome from northern Colorado (but not much longer). Wife and I have seen numerous tv shows about Alaska and the scenery looks fantastic. Unfortunately, we have gotten too old to even stay anywhere in Colorado anymore. Will be heading southwest in the future.
Welcome from a fellow Alaskan @Eilidh McFarlane . I am not off-grid, but a number of my friends have lived or live that way. Wind and solar?
Hello Don. Some solar, but a generator and 4 battery inverter system provides most of what I need. I don’t use much electricity - wood heat, small propane fridge and freezer.
