Well, St. Christopher’s status has been uh....kinda reduced but the Virgin Mary is depicted as being white so................ If half of those people tearing down statues did their history homework they’d find out that T. Jefferson was against slavery and inherited the slaves he had. Because of the inheritance laws at the time, he wasn’t allowed to simply get rid of them. If folks went out of their way to read the 1st draft of the Constitution they would find that Jefferson stipulated that slavery would be abolished and maintained illegal in the United States of America. Who voted against that part is another piece of research folks need to do.
Maybe, kinda, uh-huh, probably. It is said that Jefferson had 6 children by Sally Hemings, a mixed race slave but sadly, the history books are a little vague about the relationship. Because of some renovations to the Jefferson home, an apartment was found hidden within the home that they suspect belonged to Ms. Hemings.
Thomas Jefferson loved the slave who bore his children. He took her with him when he traveled. He built her a home on his plantation. He stayed with her as long as he lived.
I have read a different understanding of that, but my knowledge of history is not such that I can say "this is likely true." I read that he took her overseas at least partly because he wanted a female traveling companion. When she was in non-slavery France, she saw the freedoms blacks had there, and Jefferson had to threaten her with her children--who were back in slave-holding America--to get her to return.
Jefferson was in love with Sally Hemmings and the only reason he did not marry her was the law forbade it.
"Truscott also wrote that visitors will not learn the history of Jefferson’s ownership of enslaved people at the memorial in Washington. However, he noted that Monticello features “an exhibit of Sally Hemings’s bedroom in her cavelike living quarters,” among other information about the people enslaved there." "cavelike living quarters"? It doesn't sound like he was THAT much in love with her.
One man's adjective doesn't necessarily make it so. I am sure for appearances sake, Jefferson did assign her a bedroom in the slave's quarters. Use your head. Can you really be that naive?
I'm reminded of the buzzword that the media uses after every Trump rally, and which they're already using to report on the GOP Convention. The media describes every Trump event as being "dark" - and this despite the fact that most people who attend a rally or watch his events don't see that at all. For that matter, couldn't it be considered racist to refer to things you don't like as dark?
I read that in order to get the southern states to ratify the Declaration of Independence, it was agreed that the issue of slavery would be re-visited down the road and of course it never was leading to the War Between the States.
Yes and uh..,no. Yes, Georgia and S. Carolina would have ceded if slavery was Constitutionally abolished. No because the Constitution was set up to include more states and Article VI of the Constitution forbade slavery in the Northwest territories. Note: The Northwest territories and the East were separated by land that belonged to the French therefore the new United States had no control over slavery in those areas. But..... There were however, some laws that were set up to make sure there were no New slaves such as the law to prohibit the transportation of slaves to the United States in 1807.
Understood, but so do a lot of other words that can't be used anymore because one segment of the population or another has claimed them as their own personal insult.
