Wolves in White Coats

HHS released its report entitled "Wolves in White Coats," along with referrals to the Justice Department for hospitals and other medical programs for fraudulent billing, in an attempt to get insurance companies and government programs to pay for gender surgeries and other... I don't want to say services because they were really just serving themselves and a nutty agenda. Procedures that wouldn't reasonably be billable were coded as something else in order for payments to be processed.

Brought back a memory.
I was visiting a friend in the hospital. He was being checked out for a couple of dizzy spells. When I got to his room, he was sleeping, so I wandered around the hallway for a few minutes. As I passed by an Administration Office with the door open a few inches, I heard yelling. An older guy was yelling at a nurse: "I don't care; that's not important; we have to diagnose something that's covered or we won't get paid."
The nurse said, "He's recovering, it wasn't serious so there's no need for surgery & there's nothing wrong with his stomach." When they mentioned my friend's name, I realized they were talking about him, so I continued listening.
The guy said, "We should do exploratory." (I assume he meant "Exploratory Surgery.") Right then, the older guy started to leave the office, then he noticed the door partly open & yelled at the nurse: "How many times do I have to tell you to keep this damn door closed?"

I quietly walked back to my friend's room, woke him up & told him he needs to leave the hospital right now & I would take him to another hospital if he still wanted to get checked out. We left - no discharge procedure; he just got dressed fast & we left & I explained what I heard. He couldn't believe it.

I remember thinking, "Hmmmm, many doctors' favorite phrase is "Trust me."
