Whatchamacallit

When, as a child, I moved from New Jersey to Western Pennsylvania, I ordered a soda and got an Ice cream soda. I was expecting a simple soft drink as that what they were called in NJ, but in PA soft drinks were POP. In a similar way with milk shake and frappe in parts of New England.
Were you at what we called a sofa fountain? Most drug stores had soda counters with soda jerks serving up cherry and lime cokes, milk shakes, etc.

When it's cold outside, do you put on a jacket or a coat? Are they different things? By definition, they are different things, but to me they have always been interchangeable terms; sometimes I'll call it a jacket, and at other times I might refer to the same garment as a coat. There is also such a thing as a coat jacket, but that has never been in my working vocabulary.
Always a coat. Unless of course it was a London Fog.I think too we called some a trench coat.

I liked Jersey when I was a kid. We lived in a suburb south of NYC but it was quite rural then. My brother went back to find our house a few years ago and it no longer is rural. The winters in PA were much more fun for us kids. Winter in Jersey was boring.
Back in the 60s, my sister's in-laws owned a place 4 houses down from the beach in Margate (just outside of Atlantic City.) The boardwalk was a hike down the beach, but it was doable. You passed Lucy the Elephant along the way. I particularly enjoyed being there in the winter on a gray, overcast day. The way the ocean and the gray sky melded was almost sensory deprivation. Snow at the beach is a whole 'nuther experience.

She and her family lived in Edison for a while, and have been near the Delaware Watergap for probably 50 years. (As an adult, I've been to the Playboy Club at Great Gorge.)

My last trip to the Jersey Shore was about 50 years ago in the winter. It was delightful to have the beach all to myself.
