@John Brunner ,
@Marie Miller,
@Mary Robi , I had to be at my 6month checkup this morning, so I put a bucket of water with a towel soaking on the edge of it, in front of the the fan that’s only a few feet from them on the other side of the pipe rail. That actually seemed to do some good. Part of the towel was in the bucket so it stayed wet.
Hosing their chest and shoulders down is another way to cool them down. I have cold hosed hooves, but generally when the horse has warm hooves and is acting like it wants to founder.
I have been waiting until around 6:30 PM to feed them. They generally wander outside around 6:00 PM to graze a little and that gives me a chance to observe their movements. Thankfully they were moving as upbeat and fluid as they usually do, which is more than I can say for myself in this heat, lollol.
They have four 16 gallon water tubs — two under the overhang stay fairly cool. The two outside were hot enough to scald a child; that all got dumped and refilled.
I also have both of them on a digestive supplement and add about 20 ounces of water to their feed, it all helps to keep their insides working. The horse folks on here know that horses have the absolute worst digestive tract on the planet.
Today was the worst weather day yet and tomorrow’s not looking much better. My area is supposed to be locked into the high 90’s thru July 4th. If we ever see high 80’s again, it may be sweater time
