Two questions please

1. Navigate to the category and sub-forum that you want to post into, and then you can either click the button near the upper right that reads "Post Thread," or you can just begin by entering a title where it says "Thread Title," and the other fields will open up for you.

2. The "Update your status" feature allows you to post the latest profile update on your profile. To use this feature, simply navigate to your profile and look for the status update field. You can easily update your profile status on the "What's new" page, where your status will be visible to other users. If that's the same thing as profile posts, I have done that, only from another direction.
 
Yes, they seem to be the same thing. "Update my Status" is just a shortcut for adding a profile post; you can also do this by clicking your profile. I have done that, although I had never used the shortcut before. It's not a necessary thing.
