This is not a dating site

From time to time, a new member will join the forum and immediately begin IMing members of the opposite sex, and this makes people uncomfortable. While a lot of us will talk privately via Private Conversation (IM), that's because we came to know one another after a while, and these aren't, to my knowledge, flirting-type messages. Oh, I don't care if two people meet in the forum and decide to meet one another in RL, but that's not the role that the Seniors Only Club is intended to play.

My wife and I met in the back-end forums of the Open Directory Project (DMOZ), a web directory, where we had both been meta editors since 1998, but we didn't meet in RL for a few years, and the forums were work-related, although long-term editors sometimes came to know one another, particularly the meta editors because, while there were hundreds of thousands of ODP editors, there were only about 20-30 meta editors. However, when an editor came into the back-end forums to flirt with other editors, they would have been booted, not just from the forums, but from the project.

Private messaging someone you don't know is akin to calling someone you've never met before and wanting to carry on a conversation. The person on the other end of the telephone call is unlikely to be receptive to a personal call from someone they've never met before.

So please keep in mind that it makes most people uncomfortable when they are followed or receive private messages from someone who has just joined the forum, and who hasn't yet become part of the community through public posts in our forums. The Seniors Only Club 2.0 is a reboot of the Seniors Only Club, which began in January 2015, so some of us have known one another for more than a decade now. New members are very welcome, and you are invited to become an active member of the forum, but please know that it's not a dating site.

And on the other side of that announcement, if you are receiving unwanted messages from a new member (or any member) , please message Ken, John Brunner, or myself (whatever you are most comfortable with) , and let us know that someone is sending you unwanted messages.
That way, Ken can handle the situation.

When I get one of those, I just ignore it.

I think it's fine if a member posts, "I just got back from a trip to Berzerkistan" and the new member IM's " Wow, what a coincidence, I lived there for 40 years! Let's talk about it!" but otherwise it's skeevy if they just say, "Hi, how are you today?"
