Last night, Smoke was in a particularly trusting mood. He came into the house, went up the stairs, then came running back down and outside. He returned within a very short time and went upstairs again, coming right back down, but this time he didn't go outside. He went into my office, which is adjacent to the front door, into the next room, and then into my old office, where Ella was probably lying on the futon.
Ella hissed at him. He didn't hiss back, but he did leave the room. He calmly walked back out onto the porch. After checking on Ella, I went out on the porch to check on Smoke. He was still there and not frustrated over Ella's hiss. I spent about an hour petting Smoke, who purred and even rolled over to let me pet his stomach. If you've never had a cat, some of them are pretty sensitive about their stomachs, so that's a high-trust thing. I brought a blanket out onto the porch, so I think he liked the warmth of being on a blanket, too.
Eventually, he went on his way, though, and when he came for food tonight, he wouldn't let me touch him. Friendly days are generally followed by a few days of distancing, but the friendly days get longer and friendlier.
