Shopping--What did you buy?

For some reason I've had a hankering for scrapple. No one around me sells it anymore. I was at a doctor appointment near the state capitol and saw that Kroger out that way carries it. I swung by and there were maybe a dozen paks in the cooler. Every one of them had a Use By Date of today. Now I see why no one else carries it.

I won't be back that way for another month. Hopefully they restock.

Of course, I could look it up, but in lieu of doing that, what's scrapple?
It's a Pennsylvania Dutch/German thing, if I recall correctly...also referred to as pan haus. It's basically the scraps from butchering meats simmered with spices, then corn meal is added as a binder. It's pressed into loaves, and once it's set you slice it and fry it for breakfast. Some people (like me) shake the slices in a bag of flour before frying to put more of a crust to it. Some people (not me) also put syrup on it. I guess it originated in a waste not/want not manner when livestock is butchered.

I like it because it tastes good, and it's got less fat than bacon or sausage...and we had it when I was growing up. I don't recall my mother making it, although she did make corn meal mush, which is basically the same thing but without the meats or the meat broth (corn meal in water, pressed into a loaf, then pan fried.) RAPA is the main brand you see for sale. It used to be in all the grocery stores, but it's slowly been discontinued. I guess not many people eat it any more.

Funny you never saw it in Michigan. We had it all the time in Pennsylvania and Indiana.
