We had a bunch of snow last night, depositing about two feet of the stuff onto the paths that I had shoveled earlier. About 1 am, I noticed that it had quit, so I went out to do some shoveling. I shoveled the walk to the house and mailbox so deliveries could be made, but seeing that the town had packed the driveway with about 4 feet of tight snow, I didn't try shoveling it. This morning, I found that a mystery man with a small snowplow had cleared the front of the driveway, as he has done several times now. I don't even know who he is, and he doesn't stop, pushes the snow out of the way, waves, and goes on his way. Since that's the hardest stuff to move, given that the town plow packs it in so tightly, that is greatly appreciated.
So, today, I shoveled the rest of my driveway, finished shoveling the sidewalk going past our house, even though my neighbor to the north doesn't clear his part of the driveway, and the property to the south has been vacant for years, and also unshoveled. I shoveled a path to and around my compost pile, and a path to the railroad bed, where I walk sometimes. I didn't re-shovel the two other paths to the railroad bed, however.
Last winter, we paid someone to clear the back portion of our roof, the only part that doesn't have a metal, but where all the stuff from one half of the larger part of our house is deposited when it slides off the roof. He left my big ladder up against the house, and I can no longer lift or move that ladder, so it is still there. I climbed the ladder and cleared about one-third of the roof on that side, that being the parts that I could reach from the ladder. I tried stepping onto the roof, as I used to do, to take care of the rest of it, but, although I didn't slip, I don't feel safe on the roof anymore, so I couldn't bring myself to move beyond the ladder. The incline isn't sharp, and I used to go up onto that roof every winter and haven't slid off yet, but I am getting to be a wuss in my older years. I hate paying someone else to do it because I feel like I should be able to do that myself, and anyone we pay to do it, dumps it onto the walkway, the landing to the back door, and onto the driveway, from which I later have to move it. But I'm scared to walk on the roof now.
