Murky History/Prehistory

Junius Booth, the father of John Wilkes Booth, also an accomplished actor, mailed a death threat to President Andrew Jackson in 1835. The threat was investigated, but, as Booth was a friend of Andrew Jackson, it was decided that the threat was a joke, for which Booth apologized.

I'm sure many of you have heard the story of Edwin Booth, John Wilkes Booth's brother, saving the life of Robert Todd Lincoln, President Lincoln's only son to survive into adulthood, by rescuing him from falling from a train platform into the path of an oncoming train. This occurred in 1863 or 1964. Also an actor, Edwin Booth was considered one of the most famous actors of his day. Reportedly, Edwin didn't know who he had saved until months later, when Robert Lincoln, who had recognized the man who had saved him, told the story.

Robert Lincoln later became President James Garfield's Secretary of War, Minister to England under President Benjamin Harrison, and president of the Pullman Car Company. Edwin Booth retired from acting for a time after President Lincoln's assassination by his brother, but later made a comeback.
