Kitchen Gadgets

Being a smart ass aside, that's an interesting technique, but might be difficult for making more that one at a time. I wonder if you could put 2 eggs in a larger strainer and do them at the same time. It is interesting that someone thought of putting an egg in a strainer, unconcerned that it might ooze through.

Well you know I'm going to have to try it. I'm not really a fan of poached (steamed?) eggs but this makes me curious. I don't see why you couldn't put 2 in a larger strainer, or just use 2 small strainers and rig them up in the pot somehow.

ETA--I recently bought some OXO silicone muffin cups to try that method (egg in muffin cup in boiling water) but I haven't done it yet.

I've always liked poached eggs. When I was a teenager, I'd make 4 of them (on toast) for a late night snack.

I like eggs fried, scrambled, or in an omelet full of cheese and peppers. I'm a "hard cooked yolk" person so I guess that's why I don't care for poached eggs. My ex husband loved them, and back during that time I had an egg poacher that was a somewhat shallow pot with an aluminum poacher that fit in it. Kind of like this...

Me too!! I hate runny yolks. 🤢

I love me some soft boiled eggs. And fried eggs gotta be Over Easy. I like to dip my toast in the yolk. Regarding the poacher: if I had a basement or an attached garage, I'd be more inclined to have rarely-used single-application appliances.

(This conversation just prompted me to add an egg cup to my Amazon wish list. I'm tired of shoving napkins into a juice glass.)

The nice thing about that pot/poacher setup is that it's a regular saucepan so can be used for anything. The insert and egg cups are just "accessories". But I hear ya on buying single-use gadgets these days.

I'm going to see if the kids will start hauling off my Le Creuset collection because those are finally too heavy for me to deal with. I recently bought a ceramic coated aluminum pan and I really like the light weight of it.

I know!! It's weird because when I was a kid, I liked to dip buttered toast into runny egg yolks but after I grew up it makes me cringe. When I watch Japanese cooking videos where they crack a raw egg on top of their dish I almost lose it, haha.
I'm the same way when I see a raw egg put into a protein shake. You're not a snake, dammit! And if what I read is true, cooking an egg makes the protein way more available to your body than eating one raw (90% vs 50%.) Raw eggs also inhibit your ability to absorb B7. Then there's the salmonella risk, although I just read that runny uncooked yolks (as I've eaten all my life) also carry this risk.

I'm gonna take this up in the Egg thread.

Approximately 60 years ago, my cousin was in a bad motorcycle wreak with her boyfriend, when she was around 18 years old. I think she had broken her jaw and it had to be wired shut. She was not able to chew or eat whole foods. The nurses and doctors in the hospital that took care of her gave her 3 raw eggs in a glass of milk everyday; a couple times a day, so she could drink it through a straw and get nourishment and protein. Blah!
