Joking with Doctors

The problem with exercising a sense of humor with doctors is that, unless you've had the same doctor for a long time, the jokes sometimes fall flat. The problem is that, as seniors, we're already presumed to be feebleminded, stupid, or both.

When my hair was still long, I was assigned to a new doctor at the health clinic that I go to, because doctors tend not to stay long. She made a comment about my hair; I don't remember what, but it wasn't particularly insulting. I told her that I wasn't really transitioning, but that I had had cancer twice and, during treatment, I noticed that a lot of cancer patients were bald, so I thought that I'd minimize my chances of getting cancer again by growing my hair out. She looked at me seriously and began to explain that this wasn't how it worked.

The orthopedist was about to give me a shot in my hip. I asked him if it was going to hurt. He looked at me and grinned and said, "Oh, BIG time."

So I asked him if I could hold his testicles while he gave me the shot. He paused, thought about it for a moment and said no, he didn't think so, but maybe next time.

I really liked the guy. He had a great sense of humor and a wonderful manner. I was sorry to hear that he died a couple of years ago.
