Florida wants to eliminate property tax

President Trump has been talking about doing this, and it looks like Florida might be the test run (so to speak). The basic idea that Governor Desantis is presenting is that if you are a permanent resident in the state of Florida, and you own your own home and live there year around, then you should not have to pay property taxes.

People who are snowbirds, have property rentals, vacation homes, and also business buildings, would still pay property taxes.
As I understand it, it also means that your home must be completely paid for, so someone can’t just go to Florida, but a home and not pay taxes , unless you buy it for cash.
I don’t know if there is a requirement on how long you have to have lived in the home, but it seems like this will be a great thing for people who live full time in Florida.
Might this affect you , @Jake Smith and @Marie Mallory ?

I have always hated property taxes. They are a remnant of olden days when there was no other way to "tax the rich" and is a form of unrealized capital gains. It is like taxing you if your stock investments go up but you haven't cashed them in or sold them. If they did away with property taxes, a "sales tax" on the property when you sold it would be more fair. Sales tax with a refund is the fairest form of taxation, and is the most progressive if there is no upper cap. Real property and personal property taxes tax people for just owning stuff or improving your property and I don't think that is a fair thing to do.
