Why do people hate walking in the rain? When ambient temperatures are cool, I get it. Rain can be cold, and wet clothes, particularly cotton, absorb moisture and keep you chilled. Even with waterproof clothing, condensation builds up inside your shoes and clothing. Cold, damp air can be uncomfortable.

Wet shoes, socks, and clothes don't usually dry quickly while worn, even after the rain has stopped, and damp hair can be a nuisance. Rain can make surfaces slippery, increasing the risk of slipping.

While rain, even cold rain, doesn't actually cause colds, prolonged exposure can temporarily weaken your immune system, which could slightly allow an existing virus to take hold, but you would still have to have been exposed to the virus. You don't actually risk catching your death of cold by being outdoors in the rain, even a cold rain. In fact, it could be argued that since there are likely to be fewer people around in the rain, your chances of encountering a virus are lessened.

However, in my vast studies of people, it seems that most people hate being outdoors in the rain, regardless of ambient temperatures, but I am not among them.

If it's 35 degrees and raining, I'm not going to be out there unless I have to. In fact, if it's 50 degrees, I might not enjoy a walk in the rain so much. But, when it's in the 70s or above, a walk in the rain is exhilarating, and when it's in the 80s or above, it's even more comfortable when it's raining, as I'd rather be wet from rain than from sweat.

The clothes you wear also make a difference. Water shoes are nice because the water pretty much flows through them. Moisture-wicking fabrics, like polyester or nylon, are also good. They not only move sweat away from your skin, but they also dry quickly once the rain stops, often while I'm still walking. Cotton, on the other hand, will weigh you down and make walking in the rain something less than a beautiful refrain.

How about you? Do you like walking in the rain or watching it from your window?
