From Medical Science to Medical Myth to Insanity

Some of the craziest things were once accepted as medical science, and it's likely that much of what we believe today will be disproved, as we're already seeing the beginning of it with the COVID vaccinations of 2020. The history of medicine and doctors is full of cures that did more to kill you than to cure you.

The ancient Egyptians, Africans, and Europeans all thought that epilepsy and mental illnesses could be cured by drilling a hole into your skull. This would release the demons from your head, and if you were lucky enough to survive, you could keep the skull fragment they removed as a lucky charm. More recently, during the lifetime of many of us, lobotomies were performed on mentally ill patients.

Back in the day, people could go to the barber for a haircut and some nice, healthy bloodletting, which was used to cure all sorts of maladies, such as fevers, colds, and even cancers.

Fortunately, the poor often couldn't afford to avail themselves of some of the nuttiest cures, and thus enjoyed a better chance of survival. In 1685, King Charles II of England suffered either a stroke or some sort of kidney dysfunction. All the royal doctors were summoned, and they embarked on a treatment regimen that would have killed several healthy people. First, there was the bloodletting. Then, they induced vomiting, followed by an enema. When these didn't work, over the course of the five days it took the king to die, the best doctors in the land filled his nose with snuff, let out some more blood, singed the king's shaved scalp with burning irons, daubed his feet with pigeon poop, drilled a hole in his skull, applied heated cups to the skin, which formed blisters, and then applied more enemas, let out even more blood, and fed him the gallstone from a goat. Despite the best that medical science had to offer, the king did not survive.

Mercury was used as medicine for centuries. It has been found in Egyptian tombs dating back 3,500 years. In China, it was thought to prolong life, heal broken bones, and prevent pregnancy. Other cultures used it as a cosmetic and medicine. "Blue Mass," a pill with mercury as its main ingredient, was prescribed in the 1800s for constipation, depression, and toothaches. In the 20th century, kids were given mercury as a laxative. Yet now we know that the only thing mercury cures you of is life.

And when I was in the 7th grade (around 1965) the science teacher passed a bowl of mercury around so each one of us could stick our hands in it & feel how something that was both a liquid & a solid felt. I thought it was interesting; it felt like Jello but my hands were dry when I pulled them out. Later, at home, I broke open a couple of thermometers so I could play with the mercury. Well, I figured, "If the teacher thought it was safe........."
He also showed us an experiment - he poured Sulfuric Acid into a glass of sugar. What looked like a snake slowly rose up from the glass. Then we all were told to walk by it to observe it more closely. The teacher didn't tell us not to touch it, so I broke off a piece of it & crumpled it in my hands. When the teacher noticed me, he said, "Tony, wash your hands before lunch, that's acid." I didn't, & my tongue & lips were burning while I ate.

When I started my dental reconstruction in 1995, my dentist showed me a newsletter article about mercury in dental fillings. And she told me not to tell anyone that she let me see it, and it said, "Not to be shown to patients" at the top of the first page. It described how the mercury in fillings leaches out into the bloodstream & causes all kinds of diseases & immune system damage. It also described how dentists must dispose of removed silver fillings in detail.
