Maine's Governor Janet Mills Drops Out of Primary for Senate Seat

Governor Janet Mills of Maine has termed out for her gubernatorial seat, so she had set her sights on the U.S. Senate, hoping to topple Senator Susan Collins. However, she was primaried by another Democrat who, until he had it covered recently, had a Nazi tattoo on his chest, and who has referred to rural Mainers as stupid, or something of that sort, and has said that women who get raped usually asked for it. Yet, despite that, he was ahead of Mills in the polls, so I guess Trump was right when he said her political future was over.

Here's the American Tragedy. No one is surprised that the nazi-tatoo misogynist is ahead in the polls. People are just stupid.

So, Maine's choices in November will be Susan Collins or a progressive Democrat Nazi who has disdain for everyone who is not himself. I hate having to vote for Susan Collins.

I don't expect it, but I wouldn't be surprised if Platner won in November. In a way, as with Trump, the scandals are enhancing his appeal among many people, as they give him an anti-politician air that people like. I've talked to Republicans, even enthusiastic Trump supporters, who are talking about voting for Platner because he doesn't look or sound like a politician. In Maine, and I think pretty much everywhere, most people don't pay much attention to who they vote for.

It also doesn't help that Susan Collins is hated by at least half the Republicans in Maine. When I was a state GOP delegate in 2012, more than half the delegates walked out on Susan Collins when she took the stand, a common statement being that we'd return when the Democratic Convention was over, meaning when she was done talking. She gets reelected because the Democrats always run someone even worse against her, and they have never spent any money against her, given, I suppose, that it was comfortable for them to have a Republican Senator in their pocket. This year, Susan Collins is vulnerable, and the Democrats are probably going to spend money on it unless the scandals do him in. Thus far, I don't see that happening. Although he has been hit pretty hard in the national Republican media, I don't think that's resonating as soundly in Maine.

I've never voted for any of the Democrats who ran against her, but so far, I've never voted for Susan Collins, and I'm going to hate having to do it in November. I don't think many Republicans will vote for Platner, but many will leave that space blank or write someone in.

From what I have read about Susan Collins, she is a moderate Republican. She votes the way she thinks will be for the good of her constitutes regardless of what the party leaders stand for. I think I like that. We need middle of the road politicians of both parties. The stand and fight deal is not getting us anywhere. I remember when moderate Republicans and moderate Democrats could work things out for the good of our country.

Maine Republicans, as a whole, do not like Susan Collins. She hasn't won reelection term after term because Republicans love her. She has won because the Democrats never felt sufficiently threatened by her to run a serious candidate against her. They aren't running a serious candidate against her this year either, but it looks like they might put serious money into it.

Maine Party leaders like (or are afraid of) her because she sends a lot of money their way, and no Republican who wants to have a political future in Maine would dare run against her in a primary because she would destroy them politically and forever.
