Good morning friends, it's a lovely sunny spring morning here, and I am waking up slowly with the aid of my daily dose of caffeine I am off decorating now, it's painting the woodwork today, then some of the furniture............................. Enjoy your Wednesday everyone...
Phantom Thread I mentioned above I was going to see this movie with my daughter last night, here is my review of it............ Well to begin the first word that comes to mind is mesmerising, Caroline said weird and mesmerising, it's difficult to say too much about it without spoilers, but I will try......... Reynolds (Daniel Day Lewis) has a mother fixation, and subsequently becomes a serial monogamist, which also involves making dresses for each of his muses, until he meets a German waitress called Amy (Vicky Krieps), where the plot moves into unexpected areas, some seemingly very dark at first but then not. There is some laugh out loud humour, no violence, no sex, apart from a beautifully understated erotic scene involving taking dress measurements, and no nudity, it is simply spellbinding for the two hours or so that it runs, a truly cinematic experience and should get an Oscar in my opinion, though it isn't really that mainstream I guess. The core of the film is centred around co-dependent relationships, and how some of us get our needs met in all kinds of situations, you may recognise aspects of your own relating and others that are in your life, but the way the movie plays out is unusual, typical of the director Paul Anderson's quirky style, if you like his "Magnolia, "Punch Drunk Love" and "There Will Be Blood" you will love this, if not then probably give it a miss. The production values are amazingly good, it's set in London and other places in England in the 1950s, and is lovingly created down to the last detail............. in fact it's worth watching simply for that, plus an insight into the craft of dressmaking. The cinema which we viewed it in, is in a small country town 6 miles from Worcester and full of seniors,.............apart from Caroline I think I was the youngest person in the audience ................... I overheard several conversations afterwards about how weird it was, but very interesting. Caroline did say at the end "... I need to see that again...", which is very unusual because unlike Cathy she is not a cinephile, I am going to watch it again tonight on a not strictly legal site which may work for you, if you are interested.............. it's actually blocked in the UK, but I use a VPN to get around that.
