I just signed up for a seven-day trial of Newspapers.com which is an archive of newspapers from the 1700s to the 2000s. Of course, it doesn’t include every newspaper ever published in the United States, or every page of the newspapers it does cover, but I think I can use it in my work, and it’s fun to be able to view old newspapers from my computer. It costs about $150 a year so, unless I can find a way to persuade myself that it’s worth it during my trial period, I might not keep it, but it is interesting. You can search by keyword, area, dates, or specific newspapers, and probably a lot of ways that I haven’t figured out yet. It’s owned by the same company that has Ancestry.com.
That's a great idea - I'll have to google later to see if you can purchase a paper of a certain date I think you can
I love newspapers.com and the wonderful help it has been to my family history research. For instance, I had no idea my parents were involved in civic organisations until I got this subscription through my Ancestry membership, then I found a whole bunch of articles in a local newspaper about their church, Toastmasters, and March of Dimes fundraising activities. I had no idea they ever did anything like that, so it came as an extraordinary surprise! They never once mentioned any of these things in my hearing but I have the articles with all the details; amazing. I also love just reading old news, and the funny ads with very dubious product claims.
I just googled that Augusta, what a great idea Pity it is for America, will have to google and see if there is similar for over here @Augusta Heathbourne
http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/ You could check this one out, I don't know what the subscription is but it would be a wonderful resource.
I cancelled before my trial period was up, but I seriously considered keeping it. In the end, I couldn't justify the expense. Maybe at some point in the future, though.
