Open Range is a pretty good movie. I just learned that Kevin Costner (co-star) also directed it.

Apparently early in his career Duvall was roommates with Dustin Hoffman and Gene Hackman as they all worked retail while trying to launch their acting career. He remained lifelong friends with them. Thus spaketh Wiki.
