Party Line: A Tribute to Ed King (KDKA Radio - Nov. 19, 1971)
I only wish I would have bought up all those old crank phones when they got thrown away. You could be a millionaire now.
I distinctly remember KDKA, the rhythm of the letters rings a bell. Like WAKR, and WKYC (Cleveland). Do you suppose we got the signal all the way to Akron? (rhetorical)
This video is two teenagers who have never seen (let alone used) a rotary phone, and they have 4 minutes to figure out how to make a call with it.
Telephone Line - Electric Light Orchestra, 1977
(I believe someone hung up on him abruptly at the end)
I remember when asking for information was free then they came with a charge which was small but they wanted you to look it up. One day being lazy I called the operator expecting to pay but when I asked for the number she said WELL YOU CAN LOOK IT UP. So my reply was I would love to look it up but I have been blind from birth. She quick gave me the number and apologized and said she could dial it for me. I said I can dial it myself thank you.
I just ask my children what does it mean to hang up your phone and they had no idea. I had to explain it to them.
