MacBooks and laptops

@John Brunner is having computer problems so nobody freak out if he's MIA for a couple of days. :D
What happened ? Is he going to have to get a new computer ? Maybe he should get one of the new Apple Neo’s ? I have been reading really great things about how good they are for such a cheap price. The Neo would work with his iPhone perfectly.

All I know is that he emailed that his computer is in the shop and he's not able to log on to SOC on his phone. He does have email access but that's about it. I think he's like me and doesn't normally use his phone for internet stuff.

I was going to suggest that. They're cheap. Although I think they use iOS rather than macOS, that shouldn't matter to anyone who doesn't have macOS apps.

I read it uses Mac Tahoe OS, so the same as other apple laptops. I have been looking at them, but since my iPad does everything I need, there is no reason to buy one.
But it would be perfect for someone like John Brunner, because he can take pictures with his phone and they will be right on the lap top for him to edit and save.

I'm on my Fire tablet so won't be posting much. Do you know how the phone and laptop synch...is it web or Bluetooth. I hate having my stuff go out on the web.

Maybe Ken knows more about that ?
I think it goes through iCloud, but that is optional. Mine is set to sync automatically, so when I take a photo with my phone, within a few seconds, it is also on my iPad.
I don’t think it goes out on the internet, just from one device to the others. If there is an Apple Store near you, they can explain everything about how the MacBook and the phone connect.

I'm making my old guy list of questions on my old guy spiral notebook. Let's see who draws the short straw.

If you do not use iCloud, which would be the Apple ID connection, then you can still connect the phone and MacBook and sync things that way, and then it would not go anywhere except from one device to the other one.
We used to have to do that with the apple devices, but not anymore, since they sync with iCloud. But if you are not using iCloud, then you could connect and sync when you wanted to do that.
All apple devices work so well together, that having a laptop of the same brand makes the most sense, even if you don’t use iCloud.

There are several good youtube videos on the Neo, most of them comparing it to the MacBook Air. It gets pretty good reviews.

I'm not sure I like the charging port, which is not the magnetic MagSafe type like on an Air. Instead it uses USB-C ports.

I love the MagSafe charger port on my MacBook Pro.
Me too. It doesn't seem to get as much wear and tear as the actual "plug in" type charger. I have a windows machine right now that can't be charged because the stupid charging port needs to be replaced.

One plus to the NEO is that both USB-C ports can be used for charging, so if one does wear out there's a backup.

I've always used the Mag safe charger on my iPhone because of the reported connector fatigue issue. I may be looking at the next version up from the Neo, depending on what the differences are (external monitor port, memory support for multiple open browser tabs, external keyboard support.)

I pay $1.49 a month for iCloud it gives me 50g storage ..but to be totally honest it confuses me…..I only need it cause I’ve got way to many photos on here dating back to our 2 years living / traveling in caravan after we sold our house in Adelaide in 2004

I’m intending getting to it real soon and transferring them to my newish laptop bought close to 18 months ago .
but you can’t rush these things …
@Yvonne Smith

I did watch a YouTube recently how to transfer from a Apple iPad to a laptop ( windows )
So I sent it to hubs to experiment ..on his LT and iPad ..don’t think it was all that secessful ….winter is coming ..it’s the time of the year where we get more jobs like that done ….and not spending …time in the garden

Did that video recommend using iTunes? That's what I read when I got my iPhone but I read that it's been discontinued.

I have not had anything with Windows on it for years now, @Kate Ellery . I have no idea how you would get your photos directly from your iPad to the laptop.
Someone else here who has both operating systems will probably know. Maybe a connection cord from one to the other would do it.

I have no problem with cloud storage, so I have photos stored (free) on amazon and google photos apps. Since I have the apps on my iPad, whenever I add a photo to my apple photos album, it also goes into the other photo albums. (I pay the extra little bit to apple each month for more storage, too.)
So, if you would be okay with the photos stored in the cloud, you could just put one of the free google or amazon photo apps on both your iPad and your laptop.

Once you have the photos in the laptop in the google app, you could then download them from the app to your laptop, but I think it would have to be one at a time, which would take forever if you have a lot of photos.
I figured with mine being stored on three different cloud storages, it is not likely that they would all go down and I would lose the photos.

One of the new MacBook Neos would solve that problem for you, I can offer that solution. Everything on the iPad would then also be in your laptop if it were an Apple laptop.
The Neo is $600, and you can also get older MacBooks pretty cheap right now, since they just came out with new models and people are upgrading.
