I was just thinking about the expression "albatross around my neck" and wondered why on earth anyone would have a sea bird hanging around their neck. So off to google I go...

"The word albatross is sometimes used metaphorically to mean a psychological burden (most often associated with guilt or shame) that feels like a curse. It is an allusion to Samuel Taylor Coleridge's poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner (1798), in which a dead albatross is tied around the neck of a sailor who has brought misfortune to the crew."

So now I know.

Isidor Straus and Rosalie Ida Straus were an American couple who died in the sinking of the Titanic in 1912.

Isidor was a businessman, politician, U.S. congressman and co-owner of Macy's department store with his brother Nathan. He also served for just over a year as a member of the United States House of Representatives, representing the state of New York.

Ida refused to leave her husband and board a lifeboat. She is reported to have said, "I will not be separated from my husband. As we have lived, so we will die, together."

The former lead singer of the Yardbirds, Keith Relf, died by being electrocuted by his guitar on May 14, 1976.

Relf died in the basement of his home at age 33 from electrocution while playing an electric guitar. He was discovered by his 8 year old son Daniel. His death was announced two days later, which is sometimes erroneously listed as the date of his death.
