Kittyantics

My daughter was telling me today that cats only meow to talk to humans, not to other cats. Kittens do meow to their mother, and i know that mother cats will meow to call their kittens to themself when they need them to come right away.
I had never actually thought about it, but I do not remember hearing cats meowing to each other, except when they are maybe fighting or mating, or something like that, but not just chatting with each other.

Maybe the cat thinks of us as like their mother from when they were a kitten and meowed to her for help or attention, and they realize that we are not always tuned in to their other forms of communication.
In any case, all those meows are just for cats talking with their people …..us.

After something I saw (and heard) over the course of about two or three hours in Eureka several years ago, I would have to disagree. There were a lot of cats in our neighborhood. They had been around each other a lot and while there was a bit that "Top Cat" business, they mostly they got along. One night about 3:00a, I heard something I had never heard before, and my best guess was one of our local cats was scrapping with a Racoon. Or that a cat had been hit by a car or something. I got up and went outside for a look. There were two cats, one on my side of the street, the other in the driveway of the house across the street. The one in front of my house clearly wanted something on the other side, but every time he started to cross the street, the other cat charged, making this high pitched noise that I could only describe as a warning for the other cat. I don't know if that qualifies as "Meowing at the other cat", but it was definitely "Cat" for "Stay out of my yard!"

Perhaps Mama cat found out Daddy cat was chasing another cat? 🐈🐈‍⬛

Making other sounds besides a meow is apparently different than the kitty looking at us and meowing, from what I read, and the videos i watched about it.
Other noises, growling, hissing, yowling, and purring, are part of cat-to-cat communication. Cats defnintely yowl and scream at each other when they are fighting, or defending territory.
It is just the meows that are not part of it, except for kittens and their mothers, and they do the little meow talk back and forth.
The mother meows when she is calling the kittens, and they meow when they are calling her.

I wasn't sure... But it was something new to me, because I never heard a cat doing that before. I never had a cat, although a few of my roommates over the years proved to me that I am allergic to some cats. Although, not as bad as one of my old Neurologists. We were seeing him in his office one day and he got a phone call. He said he had to take it and left the room. About ten minutes later he came back with his face flaming red. It looked as if someone had thrown acid in his face.

He asked us "Do you guys have a cat?" We said no, we're all allergic to them. He said "So am I, and somebody in the office has a cat." He had an Epi-pen in his hand and asked if we wanted him to leave the room to take a shot. Cindy said "No, I'm allergic to bees and I carry an Epi-pen everywhere I go." So he sat down and took the shot and in about 10 minutes his allergic reaction started clearing up. After we left, Cindy says to me "Itchy eyes is one thing. I don't like it, but I'm very glad we don't react like that." I had to agree...
