Does this thread suit this forum. Or may we have a separate Innovation Forum admin?

The Australian state of Tasmania is about to embark on an ambitious and unique project..to build the world's first floating hotel.

To be based on the vast Derwent River the proposed five-storey ring-shaped hotel would become not only a tourist attraction and a viable alternative to high-rise hotel developments in Hobart, but its pioneering technology could give birth to a new industry not only in Tasmania but Australia.. and the world.

An artist’s impression of the floating hotel.

To be perfectly honest I am surprised this has not been done before.

Seems like it would make more sense to build it on a pier of some sort. There are countless hotels built over the water, and of course cruise ships could be considered a form of floating hotel. But as far as utilities, plumbing, etc. it seems to me that a fixed pier would be easier.

If it floats, wouldn't it be considered a travel impaired cruise ship? :D

I do think it looks really cool tho!

I wonder if it's going to need to be "flagged" like a cruise ship.

The casinos in Tunica are technically "ships" even though they're firmly grounded on the land. Being inside the levees, they satisfy the need for the casinos to be "riverboat casinos". Odd. There's always a way to get around any law.....
