First Name, Last Name

We will be asking members to use a first and last name as a member name here. As before, it doesn't have to be your real name, as long as it looks like a real name. In other words, "Red Rover" or "Space Commander" would not be acceptable. If you registered using a handle or only one name, please let me know, either here or in a private conversation, and I can change it for you. I think most of our former members will agree that it's just more comfortable having a discussion with someone whose member name makes it seem that they just might be a real person. I know some of you have told me in another thread, but I'm too lazy to look for that right now.

If you like, you can also use a middle name or initial, as well, but that's optional.

You can change mine to James Gale , it's my real name by the way.

No, Kens name is Ken Anderson, like always. James Gale is a new member from Canada, @Mary Stetler . Ken was away from home when he set up his avatar, so he just had to use pictures he had available, and said he was going to change it once he was home and had his main computer.
Okay, I have replaced my AI-generated avatar with a recent photo of myself.

When someone registers using a handle rather than a first and last name, SOCAdmin will write to them explaining the first and last name rule, and telling them that they can change their member name through their profile or they could let SOCAdmin know which name they want to use and it could be set up for them. Following that, if they log into the forum again without acknowledging the message or changing their name, the account will be removed if they haven't posted in the forum. They won't be banned so they can simply register again, hopefully with a first and last name. If they have posted, SOCAdmin will choose a name for them, and they can still login using their email address. If they don't log in again, and haven't posted, as sometimes happens, their account will be removed after a reasonable amount of time. So, please don't get excited if you see a member name in the list that doesn't conform; we haven't changed the rule. If it is someone who is posting, feel free to remind them of the first and last name rule, but do it nicely. Thanks.

There's a group on Facebook that posts really strange names that people have burdened their children with. Red Rover or Space Commander wouldn't even merit a snicker over there.....

The admin, @Ken Anderson, is traveling right now; but once he has a little time to check the forum, he can update the name for you, Earl. It used to be right in the information when people registered, but Ken is still working on getting the forum set up, in between having a really busy life right now.

Welcome to the SOC forum !
If you have questions about how anything works, just check the help section, or post your question there, and we will all do our best to help explain things.

There is an introduction thread, and right now, it is still stuck way down in the Chit-chat section, until Ken gets everything set up properly and it can be somewhere more findable. Anyway, please feel free to introduce yourself there and let us know where you are from, and any other info you would like to share with the group here.

Here is the link for the introduction thread.

Do you want to use that for your member name? If so, I can set that up for you. Otherwise, you don't have to use your actual name, as long as as it looks like one.

Where do you think it should be? I have actually tried not to have the introductions thread too prominent because I don't want people to feel like they are obligated to post an introductory post, since some people (meaning me, if I join another board) prefer to simply jump into a discussion without all of that, while some boards require an introductory post. Something in between would work for me.
