    Hügelkultur

Hügelkultur is a type of gardening that uses rotting wood to strengthen the soil. Rather than hauling away wood debris, you create a mound of natural wood in various stages of decomposition and then cover it with several inches of soil. Over time, fungi and moisture will turn that wood into a...

Bureaucracy Grows Even As Work and Workers Dwindle

The focus of this podcast is on the educational system, highlighting several problems, including the fact that schools at all levels are hiring more administrators than teachers and that administrators are motivated to protect their positions rather than fix the problems. Institutions will try...

    Electric lawnmower maybe?

I don't have a battery-operated lawnmower, but I have several battery-operated power tools, and I don't leave the batteries on the charger either. Maybe that can be done now, but like leaving a computer on whether I am using it or not, that's just not something I do.

    What Are You Doing Today?

I'm so sorry about that, @Hoot Crawford. Having recently lost one of my brothers (3 years older than myself), and my younger brother a few years before that, I know how you feel, or at least as closely as anyone can.

How's the Weather Where You Are?

54 degrees here, although I wore a light jacket when I went for a walk, largely to have a place to put my wallet and phone, but it was too hot to wear it while walking.

    Virtual Veterinary Care

In my case, it cost me nearly $1,000 for a prescription for an eye ointment that I had previously bought for about $5 on Amazon, before it was pulled from the OTC shelf, requiring a prescription. I knew what she needed but had to pay the price for the prescription.

    Virtual Veterinary Care

I am thinking of signing up for a virtual veterinarian plan, and would able interested in knowing what the rest of you think. There would, of course, be some things that would require an actual veterinary visit. I am talking about an actual veterinary plan, where the online vet could write...

On Deleting and Heavily Editing Posts

I really don't want to restrict your ability to edit your posts, so please don't do mass deletes. Not only does it destroy our search engine optimization, but it also confuses people who have replied to your posts or who may be looking for something that they remember seeing.

    Electric lawnmower maybe?

I thought about buying an electric lawnmower when my last one finally died, but ended up getting another gas-powered one, so I don't know any more than what I have read about the electric ones. Given that my electric chainsaw works pretty well, I don't see why it wouldn't work, particularly on a...

    Potato Sausage

From the discussion of Cornish Pasties, the other food that comes to mind, for me, is potato sausage. Just as Upper Peninsula pasties were a regional favorite in the UP of Michigan, so was potato sausage, often known as Swedish Potato Sausage. My Dad always made the potato sausage, grinding the...

    Cornish Pasties

I've tried making them a few times, but the best I could do was something that hinted at them. On the other hand, when I bought one from a bakery during my last visit, they had used ground beef. It tasted okay but it wasn't what I remembered. As I said, every family had their own recipe and...

    Cornish Pasties

It's related to my earlier post. I grew up in a small town where nearly everyone was of Swedish origins so, although the vegetable was known as a rutabaga locally, the "swede" joke was sometimes made, so I was aware of the alternate name.

    Cornish Pasties

They are sometimes known as rutabagas or swedes as well, but they are not the same thing, albeit related. We grew and used both rutabagas and turnips.

    Cornish Pasties

We called them rutabagas because... well, we were Swedes, although I was aware that rutabagas were also called swedes.
