I go once a year to my Integrative MD and she is NOT the standard drug pusher MD...and it's good to have a doctor Just In Case..... I did many yrs of process and elimination of doctors and glad I'm alive from believing some of them. And I had to give in yrs ago and go with BP med and thyroid med and need to refills every 90 days and this is done by phone. And MD gives me a year of refills...

Beth, I mentioned there will be exemptions, but you questioned me...I can expect that.

Joy, my dear, in this you and I (and probably most of us) are alike. I don't do doctors. Back when I did, my doctor said to me if I come in for a complaint, he knows it is serious because I really did not like doctors. He said a lot of folks came in with a cold and demanded medication which, of course, is how super bugs started. I was married to a physicians assistant at the time, too!
Anyway, later after that doctor died, I went to a different clinic associated with my second husband's work. It was bought out by some huge hospital company and became a satalite. You could tell the change right away and the parking lot was a lot less crowded. I would go in for something and they wanted to do tests and give shots that I did not ask for. I know my own body and if I have a hidden problem with no symptoms that might kill me, Good! That is the way I want to go. They can't fix what I want fixed and I don't want to go on a fishing expedition with them.
    grrrrrrrr

Hey Mary, I put my life into a surgeon's hands and I came out worse in many ways
than when I went in...the hip replacement.

As for the drugs they dish out, MOST have nasty side effects, I take a couple with
no side effects but the BP med could be causing less energy in this ole bode.....but
I work on that with herbals to try to "pep me up".

2 surgeries I had I'm left with damage, lots of nerve damage for sure.

Anyway, docs I don't believe really truly care about us, like politicians....it's
    so about $$$$$$$.....

Good night my dear, I'm turning off this machine. I usually do about 8PM or so. j

Medical doctors are like any other profession, there are competent ones and incompetent.

Self-diagnosis can be a good thing or a dangerous thing.

Second opinions are a good idea in some cases.

Most people that dislike medical doctors, in general, tend to suffer from hypochondria.

A dislike in general for doctors is usually a result of one expecting miracles.

Most folks I know who dislike medical doctors are ones that won't follow through with therapies such as diet or exercise or physical therapy.

An unwillingness to change your unhealthy lifestyle is not a good reason to dislike medical doctors in general.

I don't particularly trust my doctor because he's a pill push...I've tried to find another doctor button within a reasonable driving range...

I won't go to a pill pusher. I avoid internal medicine doctors because this is what they do. My PCP is a nurse practitioner that has no problem with referring to a specialist or using alternative medicine doctors. She prescribes medication when it is the best route or as a temporary crutch until testing or a specialist can reveal more insight.

Doctors are tools, not gods and as tools they are beneficial when they are needed.
Some of my tools like multimeters, saws, rulers and such do what I cannot personally do and do what I want them to until they don’t which is when I get another tool to replace it.
    Simple.

Exactly. And as for "pill pushers," I believe that's pretty much all they have for patients who are "of a certain age." They realize that (generally speaking), we aren't going to make huge lifestyle changes at this point, we may not have the physical ability to exercise, some are not healthy enough for surgical interventions, etc. So, "here's a pill. Good luck."

Well. I doubt I am (or Joy is ) a hypochondriac. I have a different way to see my health than my doctor. Medicine has changed quite a bit since the eighties. Heck look at the ads on tv. You can go to your doctor and tell HIM what you need/want for medicine and apparently the doctors listen or the ads would not encourage the viewers. I had good results with my hip replacement. But I skipped the chain of command . I went to MRIs are Us where you can get one for $600 instead of $2700 through the hospital and took the disc directly to the specialist of my choosing. It wasn't covered by insurance but I have a $1000 deductible and If I don't go to doctors, every time I DO go, I pay. Once I went in to have a tick head removed and when I got the bill it was $900! I would have dug it out with a pen knife if I knew that in advance.
At our local clinic, I was asked why I did not come for all sorts of things and I said I would, if I felt I needed them. I put myself on a good diet and lost 30 lbs. It did not seem to improve anything but I fit into clothes I hadn't worn for a long time. Lots of veggies, weeds and supplements, home grown meats...
I did try physical therapy but that did not work out. I wonder if a different therapist might have been the answer but my cane serves me well as an extra leg, a hook for retrieving things, a club for dispatching an aggressive rooster...

You are being your own doctor for the most part and probably only go to a medical doctor when it is necessary. My reference to hypochondriacs was those that constantly go to doctors for any and everything and then when doctors can't do them any good, they voice a dislike for doctors and quit going but still won't do the home care or change their lifestyle as you have and do.

I am amazed at all that won't go for routine tests like colonoscopies. My life was saved by routine testing. I chose the best doctor for exams. I will never let a general surgeon do a colonoscopy as they can do more damage than good and usually miss hard-to-find polyps. I go to a Gasterologist that specializes in endoscopies and colonoscopies. I have a dislike for doctors and dentists who diagnose and treat things that are out of their expertise.
