This morning was my first time and I was amazed at the extraordinary care and facilities provided for animals. I only visited the Cat Unit which had 8 to 10 glassed in rooms with a variety of cats. I would guess I saw 100 cats either playing, eating, sleeping. The rooms had toys, cat trees, scratching polls. Extremely clean and sanitary operation. It was obvious to be how much the staff working there cares for animals. I was happy to pledge a modest donation.
Yes, but it makes me sad. All those sweet little faces needing a home. I'm glad you brought one home for a chance at a happy life, Lon.
Don't visit, but I am "friends" on FB with a couple of rescue/no-kill shelters in Florida, and make $$ donations
I've been to a few. I did volunteer work at an independent rescue shelter in the mid 70s. As Lon said, the workers there really care about critters. As Beth said, it's still depressing. You want to take all of them home.
That was nice of you to help them out. Is this the first one you've visited? Actually, I don't recall you talking about any pets you had before adopting Cranberry.
Many times, and we make regular donations to our shelter here. Fifteen years ago, I read an article about a shelter 35 miles away in a small town that was having trouble with too many stray dogs, and were euthanizing very many of them. We decided, on a lark, to drive out there and take a look. There was a small dog, looking puny, with oil and ticks all over him, that someone had found on their porch along with brothers and sisters. The other dogs were picking on him and he was at the bottom of a pile of larger dogs. When he saw me, his ears popped up and he started to wag his tail. I told my wife that he had picked me, not me that picked him. We paid $10 for him and took him home, then had him cleaned and given shots at a veterinarian office. I lost him 8 months ago because of Cushions disease, and miss him very much. As far as cats, I've never paid for a cat, but have had many of them as pets. We have a field at the back of our house and a pretty busy road on the edge of it. Many of the cats we've had were apparently dropped out of a car, and we have rescued them and taken them to our vet for the purpose of having them attended to for various injuries. They have all been sweet and given us a lot of affection and comfort. I've never been without a cat - they will love you no matter what. Believe it not, I've spent more on medication and treatment for cats and dogs than I have for my family (I'm extremely thankful for the good health of my family). So, get a cat and enjoy the company, by all means, for you won't be sorry. They are easy to care for, and the litter cleanup is not any trouble, for cats are known for their tidiness and cleanliness. Good luck.
I had to laugh at that. I faithfully took my dog and cat in for their annual checkup long before I started getting my own physical every year.
All the Cats & Dogs we've lived with for the past 40 years have come from Animal Shelters. Prior to that there were Dog Pounds, which were inferior. Hal
We got our last 1/2 Sibi 1/2 Malamute at a County Shelter. Due to her escaping a few times from our backyard, we ended up taking her back to the Shelter. Before we got "Nikki", we went to a Rescue and got two Husky's, brother and sister, but due to them fighting twice, once in the topper of our truck and then, right in front of my wife in the kitchen (over food dishes), we took them back to the Rescue the following Monday after we got them. "No more Rescue's" we both agreed on.
