HOA?

Good evening to all-

I lived part-time for a while in a condo with a HOA. It was miserable. I hated the idea that someone else could tell me what I could and could not do with my property. And I was on the board of directors of the HOA.

I do not and will not ever have anything to do with any place that has a HOA in place. I was reminded of my personal disdain for HOAs by my son's recent "warning" from his HOA that he could not park a car on the street in front of his house- this is in Phoenix AZ.

Have any of you here ever had anything positive come from a HOA?

We have a HOA....well "technically". It's $109 a year and I'm not even sure who's on the board. Somebody must be arranging for the two entry areas and the area around the pond to be mowed and the entries decorated for the holidays. Nobody responds to complaints and I'm not sure everyone even pays the dues. We do.

If I were looking for a house to buy, I wouldn't even consider one in an HOA.

I'm with you, Ed. It's my property. Health & Safety issues are already addressed in the statutes.

We have an HOA; it's not a big deal. We take pride in our home so we keep our property maintained and the lawn mowed, so they have no reason to hassle us. I'm kind of glad that they do send letters to people who need to clean up their yard or whatever because who wants to live next to that?

They also keep the riff-raff from painting their house orange with a green roof. If I wanted to live in an amusement park I wouldn't be here.

The annual dues of about $250 go toward maintaining the boat ramp, street lights, etc. Our subdivision is on the river in an unincorporated area.

No HOA's in my area. In times past, any new development that tried an HOA, was met with law suits. We have no condos, it is either full home ownership or lease/rent. You can't buy half of a duplex.

I never have & never would have anything to do with an HOA. I have friends who live in HOA condos. They pay $400-$500/month for property maintenance. Very little maintenance is done.

There are HOAs and there are HOAs. Covenants are available through realtors or directly from the board.

I believe most condos have HOAs out of necessity. They pay for landscaping, building maintenance, shared utilities such as shared-area lighting, security and larger maintenance items like roofing, plumbing, pest control, etc. In my opinion, condos are best rented and not owned.

Many people claiming the horrors of an HOA have never even lived in an HOA development so really have no idea what it's like. One should definitely read the covenants before buying into an HOA property. Other than our $250 annual dues we have exactly zero interaction with the HOA. They have an annual meeting to review budget and any property issues, and periodically send out letters of general information in the mail.
