Tamsulosin aka Flomax vs. ProstaGenix

Any men here take Flomax and/or a product called ProstaGenix?

I started taking Flomax in August of last year, due to bladder spasms I was having in the middle of the night. Those spasms were really starting to hurt! I think the spasms came from getting the radiation therapy for my prostate cancer. Anyway, my Oncologist, where I was getting my radiation therapy, prescribed a medication to me for the spasms, but I got a bad stomachache from the first dose, so stopped taking it. I talked to my 1/2 brother and he told me he was on Flomax. So, I had my Oncologist order me a prescription of it. Started taking 30 minutes after I ate breakfast, but dizziness hit me pretty bad an hour or so later. So, I switched to taking the Flomax 30 minutes after supper and every-other day, instead of daily. Even then, it made me pretty sleepy, but it was bedtime anyway. My bladder spasms stopped, but I was still getting up a number of times to urinate during the night.

I found ProstatGenix on Facebook and it's sold on Amazon. I read that it can be taken with Flomax, but why do that when the product is supposed to be similar to Flomax. ProstatGenix gets some great reviews, but as we all know, not all products work on all people.

I try not to drink (not any kind of alcohol or coffee at all) too much after 6PM, but that doesn't always work. I would ask my Oncologist about this product, but he is so "laid back" with his advice, he'd probably just say "try it". Another thing: I tried stopping the Flomax altogether, however only made it to three days.

And, just to mention this, my wife is now on a medication to help her control her bladder. She can also get up multiple times a night to urinate. We don't require a full night of sleep, just better sleep than we've been getting.

They work differently @Cody Fousnough so they are probably okay to use together. Tamsulosin is an alpha-5 blocker that relaxes the muscles in prostate sphincter allowing urine to flow more freely. Protagenix (and Super Beta Prostate) supposedly reduce the size of the prostate and reduce inflammation therein. Look up the various supplements and see how they compare. Alcohol reportedly slows the excretion of Tamsulosin keeping it in the system longer and causing low blood pressure problems in some folks.

I have a bottle of the ProstaGenix on my Wish List in Amazon, but wanted to find out more info about it, before buying a bottle.

I've been taking Tamsulosin for years now, enlarged prostate. Exams and cancer tests all negative. I can't recall any adverse reactions.

I take Tamsulosin and have been taking it for years.. Absolutely no side effects at all.. Works great..
It only costs $2.00 for a 90 day supply when prescribed by your doctor..

Do you take one or two capsules a day? My brother told me he takes two, but he told me that a few months ago, so I don't know if he still takes two or just one now. I tried two, but it upset my stomach, so I went back to taking one. When do you take yours, in the morning or evening?

Are you getting up multiple times a night to urinate? I do, most nights that is. I thought Tamsulosin was suppose to stop that? A couple of times is ok, but not almost hourly.

Steve, I'll ask you the same questions I asked Jacob:

As for "Works great", yes, it did stop my bladder spasms that got pretty painful, but going to the bathroom to urinate over half of the night, I don't like.

Jacob and Steve, this is why I'm asking about that product ProstaGenix. It is suppose to stop, or at least less of, the urinating at night that gets me up.

So, Tamsulosin/Flomax is used by some of you guys, but nobody has used/tried ProstaGenix? If I buy a bottle, for $44, it can't be returned. Part of me is somewhat terrified to try the product without getting more information about it and if anyone here has used it or not.

One capsule in the evenings. I haven't noticed any need to get up more often though. I am also on diuretics so I'm already going often from that.

Not me. Sorry.

I take one pill in the morning just after eating breakfast.. Always only took only one pill..
I have been doing this for the past 10 years, if not more.. Absolutely no side effects..
Yes I get up to go to the bathroom during the night, but at least my plumbing system is working just fine..
I get up twice during the night... I also drink lots of water during the day as I always did.. I try not to drink for a few hours before bed time...
Please remember that I am 85 years old...

I take 2 capsules .8mg of Flomax in the evening for years. I sip water continually all evening. I've had no adverse reaction to it.
I don't not take ProstaGenix, however I do take prostate supplements. I vary the type of supplements they all will contain saw palmetto, plus a assortment of others herbs like Stinging Nettles Root, Pygeum African, Beta Sitosterol, Pumpkin Extract or Seed, Cranberry, Lycopene.
I've been taking prostate supplements for over 45 years because of an enlarged prostate.

Since my radiation treatment for prostate cancer emptying my bladder at night varies right now I'm between two and three times a night. There were times I was going every hour, sometimes with difficulty. I was prescribed a pill Phenazopyridine to help relieve those issues, when they occure.

Apparently the bladder takes a beating along with the prostate when you have radiation treatment. I'm told it can take a year for the radiation side effects to be completely gone. Until then you just have to treat the symptoms as best you can and hope they will relieve themselves in time.

The hormone pill I take also has lots of side effects. Between the radiation and hormone side effects I wake up not knowing how the day is going to be some days is pretty good others it's horrible.

The thing to remember is "I wake up", that's the good news.

One more thing about me.....
I sleep 9 hours a night, almost every night..
I go at bed time,.... I go 3 hours later,.... I go another time 3 hours later,.... I go when I wake up...
That's 2 times during my sleep....

Thanks, guys, for all your comments/information. I've decided to go ahead and buy a bottle of ProstaGenix and try it.

As for the radiation therapy, I had a rectal spacer (SpaceOAR) put in by a Urologist to protect my rectum from radiation. However, I believe the radiation still affected some of my stomach organs. Towards the end of my radiation therapy, I was starting to get bladder spasms in the middle of the night. That's when my Oncologist got me the Flomax/Tamsulosin. In my last consultation with my Oncologist, he told me that I could "try" and take a break from taking the Tamsulosin, but found out that that didn't work. I forgot to ask him just how long I'd have to be on the medication.

I was taking the Tamsulosin daily, but I was breaking out with sores on my buttocks. So, I stopped the "daily" thing and went to every-other day and my buttocks cleared up. I read that it can be taken every-other day, as well as be taken at night, 30 minutes after dinner, to lessen the "drowsiness" that I was getting from taking it after breakfast.

A main thing that I have found out, people can react differently to medications. Another thing I've found out, there are a number of side-affects in getting the Lupron Hormone Injection, that I currently get every three months. Next month, May, I will be getting my 4th injection.
