Rediscovering hobbies and simple joys; what’s keeping you busy these days?

Hello everyone,

I’m James, and I’m just about a year away from retirement. Lately I’ve been enjoying the extra time to travel a bit, cook some new recipes, read more, and get outside whenever I can. Slowing down has made me appreciate the little things a lot more.

I’d love to hear what hobbies or activities other people here have been enjoying lately. Is there something you’ve always loved doing that you’ve returned to, or a new interest you’ve discovered in recent years?

For me, trying a new dish or getting lost in a good book feels like a little adventure, and a walk in nature is always a nice reset. I’m looking forward to reading your stories and maybe picking up a few new ideas for ways to spend my free time.

Always happy to chat if anyone feels like saying hello and hope everyone is having a great day!:).

Howdy from Houston, James. Where are you located? A lot of SOCers are still suffering through winter but some of us are already outside playing in the dirt.
Currently traveling for work I am in the NE part of the country until next week, yes a nice warm Houston spring sounds wonderful right now!

Thank you to everyone for the warm welcome! What is everyone up to today on this Monday?

It's nice to have you join us. Who's the cute pup in the front of your avatar?

I built models as a kid. I got away from it for probably 25 years while getting married, buying a home, putting two kids through college, etc.

You know, grown up stuff.

I got back into it when my kids got old enough to realize Dad wasn't cool to play with anymore and went and got their own friends.

I've slacked off in the last 5 years or so, though. I just don't have the passion for it like I used to.

What kind of models, Dave? Have you seen the complicated Lego sets that are the thing now? Not "models," but many people enjoy the assembly process.

The USS Constitution was my last build. It took me almost two years. My wife would come into my shop, and say "How can looking through a magnifying glass, trying knots with two tweezers, possibly be relaxing?"

Over the years I've built hundreds of things. Cars, planes, boats, bunches of military vehicles, etc.

The most interesting thing I ever did was the International Space Station. Took me a year and a half. That was a really fun build.

Half the fun is researching the piece you're about to do. You get to learn the history of a ship, or whatever.
