This floor is wood, but in bad repair. It was stained and varnished on three sides and painted gray and brown in other areas. I have debated back and forth as in varnishing or painting and decided to paint. First I am sanding off the old stain and varnish with a hand sander. Then I will paint the floor with white premier and then paint it a med light green. I intend to do the woodwork in a cream color and then put up off-white mini blinds and double curtain rods so I can have white sheer curtains, as well as, dark jade curtains. This project should not take as long as the bedroom as the sanding part is easy. Plan to add pictures as I go along so you can see beginning to end.
Everyone is into the hardwood look but I can not do the heavy duty sanding with all the dust and then breathing in the varnish fumes. So I hope I can get this project done and have a nice living room soon.
Any thoughts or ideas are welcome. Maybe I should make youtube video's as that is where I go to learn how to fix things. lol Like redoing the glaze on storm windows, oh, but that is another post. :)

This thread reminds me of the repairs that our house needed. I think I had already posted this in another thread. But anyway, we may include the road in front of our house. It is not concrete yet and the rainy season is making it muddy. My husband had given me costing estimates of around $1,000 for the cement, gravel, iron, and labor. And like before, we are still in search of a good handyman who can do masonry, carpentry and plumbing. We may need a budget of $2,000 for everything.

Well the living room floor is finely done. I worked on it Friday afternoon and put the second coat of paint on the floor and it looks so pretty. Now of course I have to touch up the baseboards a bit where of course the green had to splatter. Then on to putting up mini blinds. UGH!
The color of green is much lighter than the picture above and so I will add pictures of the work I did on the floor to get it ready to paint, as soon as I get them in my computer.

I'm looking forward to seeing your photos @Sandy Wood. I have debated whether to refinished the dining and living room floors which are hardwood. I've watched so many videos on YouTube and every step is very time consuming not to mention the preparation of moving furniture around or outside. This has been on the back burner for years now. I hate the thought of me just settling for the way it is.

I put laminate flooring instead of hardwood in most of the rooms of my house replacing the cheap carpet that was in here. I hired somebody to do it though. I really couldn't contemplate doing it myself actually. However, the guy I hired ended up doing everything himself as his two helpers didn't show up, and he didn't finish all the small pieces. so I have a few gaps around. It doesn't look bad, it just isn't perfect. I would love to put matching laminate in two other rooms but I have other projects that need to be done..like getting my porch repainted. The trouble is I never have the money to do anything. I need to do pressure washing first, as there is a bit of mold that has shown up. I do have paint though..Washing the stuff off is a pain, and the pressure washer would make the job much easier, Yes, I know you can't use it on vinyl..I am talking about the wood parts.

Not having the money for projects is a bummer. Another option I considered is wood flooring. I would lay it myself because it seems pretty cut and dry. There wouldn't be much adjusting because the adjoining rooms are four cornered. I've been looking around I just haven't seen a style that's appealing to me.

The living room floor is all done and the new carpet is laid on top. I set up my futon and got my brother to help me put up my mini blinds and then I hung up my new curtains. It is so nice and fresh looking, updating an old house but doing it on a tight budget.
@Von Jones, You might just put in nice area rugs to cover your hardwood floors. If there is a discount store in your area that sells them at a lower rate then most. My floor was not a hardwood (nice) floor, but was a mixture, otherwise I might have sanded it. The furniture moving was not that hard, but sanding does cause a lot of dust in the air. As it was I used a hand sander and just went with the grain of the boards. And the painting was hard on my knees and hands but it is nice to look at.

With all the excitement I have gotten behind in putting up pictures but hope to do it soon. I have moved on to painting outside more trying to get things done before winter. So now my painting is on the garage.
