Out front of my house is a nice sun porch with an outer skirt of old cedar shingles. They had been painted years ago and now were in a sorry shape with peeling paint and bleached out wood in some spots. For the last three days I have been scrapping off the old paint and getting ready to put a fresh coat of forest green paint on.
I have learned how to scrap off old paint and how to wear out my hand and shoulder. I am tired and hurt all over but almost have them all done on the front and one side. When I scrapped some of them they got fuzzy now I have to sand the fuzzy ones. Have you ever had to work with cedar shingles?

I know that problem with shingles because an uncle was talking about it when he was here on vacation from his job in the US. And before that, I didn't know that shingles were made of wood.

I have never experienced doing house repairs for I relegate it to my husband. What a coincidence, today is the start of house repairs which we planned so many months ago. My husband was able to hire a carpenter and a helper yesterday so the list of repairs is ready... together with the budget, huh. The carpenter's daily wage is 500 pesos, that's slightly over $10.

I have no experience with wooden shingles but watch a DIY episode on it. Of course, perfection was the goal so there was a lot of hard work put into the process. Some of the shingles had to be replaced even.

How long have you been working on the shingles, @Sandy Wood?

Well I just scrapped off all the loose paint and then hosed the area off, and waited a day or so till it was dry and painted all those cedar shingles. They are the same color green as our top heading, a pretty forest green. I started with the top row and by the time I reached the bottom layer, the top was dry enough to put on the second coat. It all looks so pretty. Now I am going to paint the outside of the cellar door and the garage door the same color and do the outer trim and window frames white.
Painting is the cheapest way to give everything a new look on a tight budget.

Got most of the outdoor painting done but still a bit to go and then our weather turned cold. So unless we get a bit of Indian Summer, the rest will have to wait for Spring. I finished the front of house cedar shingles, got one coat of paint on cellar doors, and got one garage door painted. The forest green color looks so nice and I did the outer boards in white to frame it out.
Also learned how to do re-glazing or puttying windows, and did my front porch door. It is not prefect but it is finished. And I also put plastic and cage wire over my cellar windows to protect the frame work from anymore damage to the frames. And now I am back to working inside the house. Pictures will be included soon as I get some free time.

@Sandy Wood I hope you took pictures before you started. That way we can see all the hard work you put into it. You must either be very healthy, or you one driven lady. That's hard work! You get tired of living there, and want a little pampering, you can come help me work on my old log cabin. It's solid red oak and cedar, no painting necessary. :D:D:D
