    My nephew Danny in the Marine Corps ordered it sent here to our place where next week he and I will begin the daunting task of installing it in his 1965 Ford Galaxie, in which he has already installed a brand new 5.0 HO fuel injected engine.

    This is a completely mechanical overdrive transmission, an AOD as it's designated, designed by Ford in 1982 but only released for production in 1985 or so. It was used across the product lines even in trucks, until about 1994, when it was revamped to operate electronically, becoming then the AODE. I used one in the '90s when I installed a similar engine in my 1979 Ranchero; it ran like a champ, making numerous trips between Phoenix and the Missouri Ozarks as we commenced moving there. It got amazing fuel economy, 25+ mpg during those trips. Wound up giving the vehicle to Danny in the 2000s.

    It was shipped very well packaged, along with a new torque converter and auxiliary hook-up parts.

    Shipping weight was 170 lbs. These babies are rough to handle under a vehicle. As a young man, used to bench pressing 200+ lbs., I hefted them in and out of their mounting place against an engine by balancing them on my chest. Now, this is accomplished using a transmission jack.

    This sort of heavy work was once "run of the mill" for me. How I wish I still had such abilities, but the physical requirements are now just too demanding. Loss of muscle strength has "snuck up" gradually, taking years to reach today's low point. OTOH, a few months ago, I could not rise up from a chair without help; today I do so routinely, but to rise up to a standing position from a fall to the floor is still not possible. This part really bugs me!

    There comes a time when we can only cherish memories of years gone by and our wonderful achievements. Feel consoled you still have the know-how and with the help of your nephew you can put together the pieces.

    How did the installation go, Frank? I thought there might be documentation photos in this thread. :D

    @Beth Gallagher

    Sorry for not posting. My nephew arrived yesterday and we have been confined to the shop pretty much since! But, he is leaving first thing tomorrow morning headed back to San Diego, to spend a month in the field, desert, with his U.S. Marines group. He is one hearty lad!

    The transmission has been installed, but the new, shortened driveshaft won't work due to an incorrect rear U-joint. Today he helped my wife and I haul a new swamp cooler out behind the shop........soonest he can return is beginning June (hot, hot!). Tonight we partook of a great meal at the AVI Casino restaurant, which only reopened last Monday after being closed a year....... I finally got my beloved Prime Rib! Wonderful! A real pity when the most significant part of living is eating!

    I'll try to post some pics. Frank
