Not sure how this is legal but this morning (10/20) I got an email for a kit to make an untraceable handgun from Gunstuff.com. That is just what this country needs.o_O

New ideas and concepts in the firearms field are "legal" until BATFE (Bureau of Tobacco Firearms and Explosives) decides they are "illegal". A good example was the AR-15 Drop-In Auto Sear; here's what it looks like:

    upload_2020-10-20_10-14-37.jpeg

After a tremendous surge of public outcry, both pro and con, and after many tens of thousands of these little pieces of steel were made and sold publicly, BATFE finally ruled them illegal: they declared them to be "machineguns"! Believe it or not!

Well, folks of course who delve into the gray areas of gun ownership demanded they be allowed to keep their little toys. BATFE responded by requiring any previously owned auto sear to be registered with the Treasury Department, exactly as though it were a machinegun, at a tax revenue cost of $200. I suppose many DID register, for then they could legally SELL the damned little things as prices skyrocketed. Just how big a deal is this? Here's one home-made:

Out of a coat hanger! Slick machinegun, no?

Here's how far this nonsense went: The auto sear simply dropped into place in the AR-15 lower receiver, thus:
    upload_2020-10-20_10-23-15.jpeg

Several MILLION AR-15s are privately owned, all were amenable to this "conversion". So, BATFE told the manufacturers (who were having a hey-day of increased gun sales) to MODIFY all future machined receivers so the drop-ins could not be "dropped-in". Now, the knowledgeable prospective buyer of an AR-15 immediately inspects the rifle he considers buying to see if it is "pre-design change". Of course, the value of the early-made guns is higher.......,.

Which gets us here: I suspect the OP reference here to Gunstuff.com concerns a new idea in selling handguns. They are selling polymer handgun receivers identical to a common Glock Model (17?) that have not been finish-machined to allow assembly into a completed gun. The "completion machining" consists of drilling several holes for the pins on which triggers and hammers pivot, and removal of several small plastic ledges hindering assembly. All the work may be accomplished by hand tools. Completed, the owner has "made" a handgun, it belongs to him, which is not illegal pursuant to the Gun Control Act (GCA) 1968. However, the gun cannot be SOLD legally, nor ownership transferred.

Much of this nonsense may be compared to the "traffic signal cameras": can a ticket be issued to a "vehicle" being driven on-loan by a non-owner? Can a gun be bequethed to another, perhaps a relative, or given as a gift, or lent to another, without interpretting this use as a "sale"?

Did you try to find that website? I don't believe it exists, so that may have been a spam or phishing email. Also, if you search for "handgun kit," you'll find hundreds of websites.

    Gotta love 3d printing.

Don't worry...bad guys will always find a way. And stolen guns are untraceable as it is.

    @John Brunner

A number of times I have been approached while target shooting on Public Land by a local zealous cop. One young one got very upset during our discussion once, as he realized my friend John was now behind him. He remarked suddenly and forcefully how he had been trained to never let anyone get behind him. I remarked paranoia strikes deep.

Anyway, they always ask to record your firearm's serial number, then call it in to determine it is not on a "hot list". I've always wondered exactly what difference it would make if S/N # 35467 had been used to commit a crime. If records say it was, never mind that the criminal committing the crime is serving time now, the gun becomes Police Property, even if the guy's wife desperately needs to sell it to pay the rent.......

If a person is clobbered by a blunt tool, that lying amongst a bunch of similar tools, say, shovels, far less attention will be paid to it than were it a gun.

Gun story: I foolishly left my pistol atop an animal cage in front of our house while I attended to business elsewhere; upon returning, it was gone, stolen. The only neighbor's son, perhaps in his early 20s, whom I knew, happened to saunter by, and I told him about the stolen gun. He had never seen it up close, expressed remorse, I called the cops to report the theft. The young neighbor, a known neer-do-well, was suspect strongly in my mind, so I mentioned the gun briefly, and he jauntily replied, "I had a 9mm once"!

He had no way of knowing it was a 9mm! I considered long and hard how I might squeeze the truth out of him. Did his remark come from sheer stupidity, or was a playing with me, knowing I could prove nothing. What if he strongly expressed innocence? Force it out of him under threat? I would have willingly settled for return of the gun, a possibility, but not a certainty. We lived very rurally there.....the surrounding area consisted of 28,000-acre Phoenix South Mountain Preserve. Should I confront him for truth under threat of death? I was so pissed off at feeling helpless, cops doing nothing, thief standing before me......

I let it slide, "writing it off" to my own stupidity. "Traceable"? A joke. I had purchased the weapon at a Glendale gun store, years earlier, was the legal owner, never heard from the cops at all. The young man, meanwhile, disappeared, as though he had sensed how "close" he came..........

All these laws piling up just to play "Gotcha!" with guys like us.

Our governor (the guy who won by calling his opponent a racist and then got caught in a college yearbook wearing blackface) pushed to let felons out of prison early, and then asked to have an extra $600,000 budgeted for the Department of Prisons in anticipating of locking up all the criminals his new gun control laws were gonna make out of honest citizens. These people are not Americans, and neither are their adherents.

The majority of the police in Virginia are straight-forward and casual about our right-to-carry, but there are those in the liberal strongholds who have drunk the Kool Aid. I was at a shop in Charlottesville (liberal university town) and saw someone walk in with a sidearm and sit near me. I commented on her gun and told her I carry a Glock sub-compact. She was in civies and said "I'm a cop," as though my commenting on what I carry spoiled her special status. I was glad I said something.

The only people who will be affected by new laws are the law abiding and they don't need any new laws. All the laws out there just need to be ENFORCED. It may come to pass that new laws will make lawbreakers out of citizens even if they themselves change nothing.
Chicago has many shootings every day--sometimes 100. Not by police. But the situation was basically ignored. Chicago has the most gun laws in the country and the most shootings. The occasional 'mass shootings' got headlines to try to force new laws. But hundreds of shootings in a day get nothing. I fear now our second amendment is truly in danger and todays law breakers will be the only ones with the guns.

That was the intent in the past legislative session here in Virginia. As Democrats were letting felons out of jail, Governor "Al Jolson" Northam was putting together his gun control package and requesting extra funding for the Department of Corrections in anticipation of locking up all the new criminals he was gonna create.

I never thought I would live to see the day that our own government decided that certain citizens were the enemy, and those politicians would openly declare war n the most law abiding.

As the ancient saying goes: "When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns."

This video explains all about how people can legally make and own firearms, and that it has always been legal for a person to do this, providing that they are not making them to sell.
It is about 20+ minutes long, but also explains what the new gun laws will start to look like should Biden become the president. Even many law-abiding citizens could become felons according to some of these laws, and for the many reasons that people will not be allowed to own a firearm.
Since we know that laws do not deter criminals, these laws are basically only going to affect people who are not criminals.
