Fifty-one years ago yesterday, black Muslim leader and civil rights activist Malcolm X, 39, was shot to death inside Harlem's Audubon Ballroom in New York by assassins identified as member of the Nation of Islam. Three men were convicted of murder and imprisoned; all were eventually paroled. One of many preludes to the terrible things to occur in 1968, in Chicago. I was there, a young adult, and remember neighborhoods aflame, the news showing firefighters being shot at by snipers on rooftops. It was a horrible time, unforgettable. FS
