I have read the Bible a few times and although I can't quote any of what I've read I do remember some parts that I hold dearly through each day. There are moments in each day that I find myself ready to take drastic measures because it's just not going 'my way.' Before things begin to get out of control I catch myself and I hear "Be still and know I am God." Not verbatim mind you, but it does settle me down and I can go on with my day or sleep peacefully. What is your favorite scripture that you hold dear?
Wife bought me a Men's Devotional Bible a few years ago. There are some great Daily Devotionals in it that I try to read daily. I remember one time when I started, from the beginning, reading the Bible. What I was reading scared the heck out of me! I guess I didn't realize just how powerful God is. I didn't read the entire Bible, but have watched programs on tv about the different Books of the Bible. Wife and I watched the mini-series A.D. and thought that was really interesting. We are both Christians and anyone could tell that by the Christian dvd movies that we have.
I remember in Sunday School how the teachers would emphasis the mighty works of God and that prompted me when I got older to find out more. To me they didn't emphasize enough because it scared me so. There were events that was never told in Sunday School that led up to those 'mighty works.' But I was and still is a curious child at heart and I wanted to understand 'why?' so I just kept on reading.
I used to read commentaries on different books of the Bible. These would give detailed info on the way things were back then, explaining the why's and wherefores' . Very interesting.
Yes Ike, very interesting. I read those too but I would take it further and sit back and imagine what it was like and sometimes I would find myself crying. Sometimes because different commentaries see things differently it became confusing and I would be off on another search to find common ground.
Favorite all time scripture(s) of mine? Romans 8:38-39. For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:28. For we know that all things work together for good, for those that love God and to those who are called unto His purpose.
If I'd have to choose just one, I'd go with Psalm 56:3 What time I am afraid, I will trust in Thee. There are a number of verses about not being afraid and letting God be in control, and I find comfort in all of them.
I read this scripture when I read Frank Peretti's The Present Darkness. It opened my eyes to what we battles we can't see with the human eye.
"All your children shall be taught by the Lord, And great shall be the peace of your children." Isaiah 54:13 This Scripture promise was given to me by the Holy Spirit during a time I really needed to know that God would take care of my daughters if something should happen to me. This promise has given me great peace and comfort through many seasons of my life.
That is truly a wonderful scripture, @Babs Hunt , and I can see how that would comfort you when you were worried about your daughters if something should happen to you. @Babs Hunt. Glad to have you too. This verse is going to make a nice plaque to put in place with my children and grandchildren's photos.
