Our mango tree was really looking good but I guess it was too good. The tree split down the middle and three main branches went on the ground the tree was healthy no rot. The last photo is a branch still standing
I think the half tree will be OK her daughter tree was starting to split too. We put a rope around the two branches holding the tree together.
Everything I read pretty much says this: Nothing I've read talks about them splitting due to are or out-of-control growth.
There is probably 1000 lbs of mangoes on some of those branches. That tree has given me mango that were 5 lb. The tree beside it was from a seed of the first tree but the mangoes are not quite as large.
Yup. That's what surprised me when reading "no pruning required." Those limbs are obviously over-laden.
My detective cap is on, lol. Something is amiss here. A healthy mango tree splits? Ohhh, it had to have had some help. Were you able to save any of the mangos from the broken branch? I hope so.
We saved the large ones and hopefully they will ripen. The smaller ones were given to my father in laws pigs. I think the sear weight of all those mangoes with a wind done all the damage. I think we have saved the other tree with some rope. After the harvest I think it is do for a big branch pruning.
Yeh, I went off reading stuff and the general concensus is that these trees never need to be pruned. But this one sounds too fruit-laden.
I am no expert in levers but would think 1,000lbs on a twenty foot branch swinging in the breeze would have a lot of force. We are cleaning up the mess now and hopes the rest of the tree does well.
Certified Arborist, here. Too much fruit was allowed to set on your tree. That did it in. As far as pruning, all trees benefit from it, if their unchecked growth gets to the point where airflow and sunlight penetration are impeded. Various spot fungi can then set up shop, paving the way for more opportunistic pathogens to move in, leading to a downward mortality spiral.
